let me preface by saying i love the DIY scene. great folks, shows are fun, backlining stuff is nice not having to bring everything and changeovers go faster sharing gear.

BUT....

lol

lol

last night show i was told not to bring cabs. and there was going to be 2 4x12s and a bass cab there. got there started setting up, i wanted to ask what ohm they were just to be sure. i asked the guy who booked us whose cabs they were and he pointed me towards someone. i asked him. he wasnt super confident but said each one was 8 ohms. i went to go look at them and both of cabs said 16 ohms on the back, one was a marshall 1960 and i was pretty sure those were 16. i didnt know if maybe he swapped speakers or something if they were rewired at some point maybe i dunno. i went back to go ask and i couldnt find him lololol.

i should have one already but im ordering a multimeter right now.

was still a really fun show. i played through both 4x12s on each side of the stage and used the QC to add a bass signal going to my dark glass into the bass cab bc our bassist couldnt make it. having a real person is obviously better but the added low end was better than playing just guitar and drums. and i was actually able to pull of sections where the guitar signal dropped out and it was just bass or sections where it was just guitar to give it more dynamics. it was really loud at least lol.

I was thinking about this concept when talking about bringing an amp head to a rehearsal spot with cabs already there. You never know what mods people do to gear and speaker swapping is at that level of most everyone tries it at one point or another. Sounds like it all went good so there's that :satan

the cabs i have at our spot i printed out a sheet and taped it to top of the cabs with big bold letters: this cab is 16ohms. please use a speaker cable or ask for one. so far its the only place weve played where ive seen that hahahahahaha and ppl still ask me what ohms they are lmao

Get a good one too. Spend the extra money now to save even more money later.

To have in your gig bag or tucked in your vehicle? No thanks. Get a cheap and small harbor freight one, for this purpose. You don’t need precision or special features. You just need a resistance reading accurate to within an ohm or two.
