It’s hard to imagine that, surreal almost!
I guess guns are for criminals here. But do I need a gun? Nope. I once during the 14 years we lived in this house had to ask a guy to leave our lawn because he was behaving, passing by. In retrospect something could have gone wrong and worst case me being hurt or killed. If I had a gun, would I have incapacitated or killed him. He could have lost his life if I made that decision and I guess (just a guess) if it had been in America it would be matter of self/home defence.
As weird as it seems, if I beat the crap out of someone on my lawn, even in self defense, I am breaking the law. Justice here would have been nice to me, because there are various grey areas in this matter. But a killing would have put me behind bars, even if I accidentally killed the guy.
Yes and no. It tells me crime rates need to come down regardless. What causes problems and crime? Guns isn’t the root cause. But If crime goes up there’s a possibility it leads to an arms race for better or worse right?
So this implies that God decided this and religion is the baseline for this law? Then I understand why this goes very deep culturally and religiously. Very interesting! One could say this comes from actually coming to a new land and settling there. I don’t believe we could say that Europeans brought this to the new land. The new land required this from the people settling there. I’m being philosophical now…..
That’s probably because most people are good people.
Thanks for your explanations, because it’s very interesting and admittedly difficult to understand the scope of this for me because of where I live and our culture.
Still, I do believe that there’s many things (very tragic and sad things) that could have been avoided if there weren’t guns around, in USA (and other countries).
There are over 14 million guns in America. They're not going away, so that line of thinking is a dead end.
As far as actually needing a gun, I don't need a gun any more than I need seat belts, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, or two ply toilet paper. But I have all of the above. Because life is uncertain.
Next up... Guns and crime. Guns are inanimate objects, they don't do anything on their own. If you think that eliminating guns will reduce crime by any significant margin, look no further than England. They went scorched earth on banning firearms and were very successful with that endeavor. And the violent crime rate was not reduced at all. Now England has a serious problem with people committing crimes with knives. Criminals are at the root of all crime problems, not the tools they use. Take away one tool, they'll find something else.
I carry pretty much everywhere I go. But that doesn't mean that it's my first option for any encounters. In fact, it's my LAST option, when all other attempts to remove myself from a dangerous situation have failed.
The first option is to avoid trouble whenever possible. You don't go looking to start a fight just because you're armed. You go out of your way to AVOID altercations-
because you're armed. The use of deadly force is not something to take lightly. It's a serious decision, and the moment you pull the trigger you have started a chain of events that could lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars in lawyer bills, and the potential for incarceration.
In America, even if a shooting is deemed justifiable in a court of law there is still the potential for a civil suit from the bad guy or his/her family. And in many areas. there are district attorneys and judges who are more concerned with their political agendas and careers than they are the rule of law and the Constitution. They'll go after you just to make a name for themselves. I live in one of those areas, so the LAST thing I want to do is even draw on somebody, let alone shoot them. My life would change forever if I did so.
Hope this gives a bit more insight into things...
