GAS: Doctor's ADHD video segment rings true

For me; I just have to know my own "outs" that work for me. I know no matter what guitar I have GAS for; I will have to carve it up for gigging. So that cuts down really most any high dollar guitar because then it 100% has to be a keeper. That and price tags are very good at keeping guitar GAS at bay and staying in the window shopping phase almost exclusively.

It's kinda why I get grief for being a gearnut but the tale of receipts from this year shows me getting the LX, the VP4 and a couple of 112 cabinets. So despite how hyped up I get for new stuff; the actual purchases are fairly few and far between. I try to keep it that way but it can be tough sometimes. Oof.

Modelers are a little different story. Though I have went through every one I care to and am stuck on what I am stuck on till something new comes out from the same company. All bets are off with amps though :nails

Modelers are like GAS on steroids but the 'buying' is digital and free because of that one time purchase.

I got most of my modeler GAS out years ago at a different place. It still bubbles beneath the surface, certainly; but generally "settled" on that front. I think :bag :cop:rofl

Well done! I will stick the AC30 clean from Alex Kenivel for now. I copy pasted his AC-30 clean preset.

(and to give you some ADHD brain train of thought: But what if Alex uses a different guitar..? Shouldn't I higher the bass a bit..? Why did LeLe have Bias and Bias X on 8.0 and 1.. and Alex has it way different.. Is Alex some metal gearhead.. and is his AC30 .. not suitable for my style??)

I've gotta say that the Axe-Fx has been an education to me in terms of what my ideal real world analog amp and hardware would be. My tastes have changed a lot and gone through a considerable refinement process over the last couple of years such that my ideal amp today would not be what I thought it was in the past.

Sure the FAS stuff isn't cheap, but it's been super useful to be able to go on an amp safari and try everything - which would have cost me thousands more if I'd gone through the same buy and sell process with hardware.

Video: ADD/ADHD | What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

So I was watching this video of a doctor helping to explain to "normal" people what ADHD is like for those suffering from the issue.

It's only a 50 second section, then the doctor moves on to another example. He's talking about intense purchasing activity.

Timestamped link starts at 13:39 :

I am not diagnosed with the disorder, but boy did this short section seem VERY familiar concerning my intense research and GAS behaviour.

🤔

Do others here have suspicions that some of their GAS behaviours may be related to an ADHD brain, whether diagnosed or not?

This is really interesting.

I honestly wonder if smart phones and social media have rewired our brains collectively. My wife and I both have the same issues and they seem worse than when we were younger. We both seem to have "adult ADHD" which wasn't really a thing when we were kids.

My best friend over the last many years had ADHD diagnosed as a teen, back in the 90's. He's been on ritalin forever and that really helped. What's interesting is he's not all that active on social media and I don't think he has the endless scrolling addiction like most adults have.

At least when we were younger, we both were musicians and would get way into hobbies, but I don't think he's nearly as impulsive on purchases.

Doctor in the video mentions that it's often hereditary and there are usually signs in parents, even if undiagnosed. Definitely worth a watch.

I'm a terrible procrastinator and I have a bunch of techniques that I try and use to get myself into the concentation zone, or "the flow" at work as a software developer. Obviously this sort of work requires intense and prolonged concentration, so this is a serious issue for me.

Still, I'm aware of it and so I take steps to mitigate:

For example, I have certain goto albums that don't involve distracting vocals that work almost every time, just so long as I manage to make myself put on the music before I get distracted and forget my own advice! :rofl

Then there are other silly goals or punishments that I set, e.g. "I won't allow myself to take a toilet break until I have this section of the work complete!". Hah! That can become both painful and VERY motivating to um... get shit done, so to speak 😅

Amen. I have a really good career but I always find it odd hearing other people say “I could not spend months away from work”

Hmmmm I could go months with just movies, series, guitar … going to guitar stores and just do nothing.

Unfortunately the reality is that work needs to be part of life to make a living.

I thought about this yesterday...I used to be one of those people who never would have thought of retiring or not working. But I just had a week off work and spent a few hours each day working on the house and doing chores. I mean I also spent a chunk of time laying around playing video games too but I really dreaded going back to work on Monday morning.

I think for me that changed when I left my old company last year. I had a pretty low stress job and I was very comfortable. Now I've been at my new job for about a year and I'm more comfortable and everyone's really happy with my work, but it's definitely more intense. Feels like I could go a good chunk of time not having to work at this point.

I am one that I don't think I will ever be able to fully retire. There is for a couple of reasons. The first being that I don't think I will ever have enough money to do that, even if I get to the point of having enough money. The second is that I get bored after about a week off. I had a time in my life where the company I worked for was sold off. I ended up with a month off of work. I was paid for the whole month. I had just joined a new band so I spent the first week woodshedding songs and doing things around the house. After that first week I started getting bored and looking for things to do. I was much younger at that time and much more active than I am today and I was still bored. By the end of the second week I was beyond bored and stayed that way until I got to go back to work.

My old manager took several months off work after a really bad work experience. He was really frugal and paid off the mortgage early, single car household, no debt, etc. So he could afford to take some time off and really enjoyed the break, doing a lot of house work, etc. Ultimately he started consulting part time to get some income again. I'd love to not be tied to a job as tightly as I have been my whole life.
