Fractal Talk

transistor tube power setting has me in hysterics rn ngl, as a rack preamp fanatic it sounds like i got 372 brand new models now. and for my beloved dual rectifier, I can actually use the tonestack without causing a trainwreck now, to find the preamp sweet spot. then go turn back on 6L6s and isolate why it would sound like cardboard. usually speaker nodes 9 times out of 10. for the record I've never had a FAS sound that I couldn't fix 100% by deleting the speaker nodes first. transistor PA mode leaves just the tiiiiiiinyest hint of s.i.c. it's tasty and light

In the old days I would've said "Soon" but that phrase has been usurped by usurpers.

Over the weekend I was playing through my Friedman JJ Junior and a Suhr reactive load box into the FM9 for effects. I wanted to see how far off the modeled amp was from the real deal and swapped the tube amp out for the Fractal model (Friedman HBE V1). I found the Fractal model to sound really bad, really fuzzy and choppy and distorted, not at all like the amp.

Messing around, I saw the input page of the amp block was set to about 50 Hz on the HBE channel where the BE channel is set to about 450 Hz. Changing that on the HBE model to 450 Hz made it sound way closer to the amp. Not sure if that was something that changed with the Friedman amps or not.

Also out of curiosity I dug out my Friedman IR-X pedal and comparing that to the Fractal amps. I can't get any of the Brit style amps close to the clean channel, but the Fender amps seem a little closer. Right now I'm pretty close using the Band Commander model, but still need to mess around with it.

My reaction every time someone says this about the Friedman models:

I agree that they don't sound good compared to pre-Cygnus versions. Cliff has explained why that is the case in this post in this thread:

It has been 4-ish years since this first came up on the FAS Forum. I would be first in line for an idealised FAS HBE. But I've given up hope and moved on to other amp models...

I'm having fun creating cheap sounding amps with the transistor option, getting me prepared for my mystery meat backline gig on Thursday.

At this point I'm picking random amp models, setting the Tube type to Transistor and picking a random cab option. Then I have my HX Stomp preset loaded with some EQ and gain staging options sprinkled with the few effects I need.

At practice last night and added a few songs last night to the list officially. Needed a rotary block so I added it to my one preset I gig with. So. GOOD. FAS Rotary is seriously the GOAT as far as digital goes. Had the usual clunk of re-remembering how to edit the active footswitch layout and assign the effect to one of the open switches. Proceeded to use it in 3 of the 4 songs we added :ROFLMAO:

“I wanna sound like Charlie Hunter. Add rotary….huh, that sounds…way better than Charlie Hunter’s rotary…. If only he were the one playing it.”

Aren’t reverb and tremolo commutative algorithms?
I don’t think so, tremolo after reverb gives you that chopped up reverb tail sound, which is cool but kind of an old school fender combo specific thing. I prefer my reverb tail not to be chopped up by a tremolo in most cases.
