Fractal Talk

Compared to the DiMarzios; it's just more of EVERYTHING.
EMGs?

Use something like this (or a PEQ in front of the AMP), tweaked to taste, and the Dimarzios will do everything as the EMGs, and more.

I'm assuming the answer is gonna be "yes" considering the price relative to the full unit's, but... extended warranty for the FM9?

What's out of warranty service like for the FM9 (for someone in the US)? Any common problems that creep up with them? Primarily studio use.

I'm not one for extended warranty personally. The Fractal line is really solid and imo most major problems probably happen early on in use.

I get wanting assurance that you are covered but the warranty is quite pricey if I recall.

However, if you do need a fix on the fractal out of warranty, depending on what it is, can be expensive. I can't recall specific instances but the fixes are often more expensive than the warranty extension.

With a new gen around the corner, I personally wouldn't, be that's just me 😀

Id say I'd be most concerned about the USB port? Outside that maybe an output but USB would be my main concern.

For studio use only I don't think you'd need the extended warranty. The hardware is very robust. There are many examples of Fractal artists doing full tours with no backup unit.

My experience with FAS customer support and repair has been very positive. I needed some replacement rubber feet for an FX-8. I contacted FAS support and got a link to order the same day. When one of my EV-1 units was acting up they corresponded with me by email to diagnose. When they decided that I'd need to ship it to them for repair the turnaround time for the bench work was one day if I recall correctly.

Thank you, that's great to hear overall!

I don't think the warranty price is too bad compared to other expensive electronics (basically 10% of cost), but it's not nothing! I mean, it's more than the cost of an EV-1 or EV-2 for example.

And good to know on the USB port thing. I looked it up and it seems Fractal is charging 50USD to fix it out of warranty (unclear if they cover shipping), so that's not too bad at least. Since I know about the problem now, I expect I'll just use a right angle USB extension cable to remove any possible strain, though I don't think I'll be unplugging and plugging it back in much anyway. Thank you!

That is a thing too lol. But I probably won't be an EA on a next gen anyway, especially if there isn't a FM9-priced floor model for a bit. But yeah, that looming is the main reason I'm hesitating and sometimes considering just doing an FM3 instead lol.

The new surround delay type sounds superb. I've been loving it for lead tones.

It seems that the metronome on / off feature can't be activated by the FC in its current iteration (only manually or via MIDI). I hope that they change that because that was what I though it was going to be when I read the release notes. I would use it way more often if I could easily turn it on / off without menu diving.

So, is it off / weird of people post "wish" threads in the FAS forum?

Cliff made a thread asking folks not to post wish threads without searching for an accurate schematic first. I'm not against this really and think it makes sense but I do see a problem with this - less tech-savvy folks are now "forbidden" (for lack of a better word) from suggesting what they'd hope gets added. I'm all in for slapping around the guys who are bullish about certain things but when I questioned this stance, comment got deleted & thread locked. I get it, private manufacturer forum & they can manage it however they see fit but can't help but feel bummed-out a bit.

I think almost all amps in existence have so far had at least one mention in the wish threads. That might have more to do with Cliff's recent comment about this more than anything else.

FAS has stated for many years that to model an amp, they must have access to that amp AND to the schematic. Not any version of a schematic floating around on the web.

Still, people post wishes for amps all the time, "as is". Other members then point out the above.

The only thing what happened today is that Cliff made a sticky post, so he and everybody can link to it.

That's not slapping, bullying etc. There's no problem.
