Fractal Talk

Interesting… I’m going to have to do some measurements and maybe try whatever pedalboard planner site(s) people always use, and also play a bunch of guitar. My main problem is that a couple of my keepers are a little larger format.
Thanks!

"Improved power amp modeling in Amp. This yields a more controlled low end, especially for non-MV amps."

"I was staring at the preamp code and realized the same improvement was valid for the power amp."

That’s the thing for me too, the few pedals I’d like to maybe add to the fm9 are larger format. I haven’t seen a two tier pedalboard that would give me exactly what I want yet. I want it wide enough for fm9 and two expression pedals and then have a second tier that’s deep enough for some larger boxes. Alternatively, it could be wide enough for those other boxes plus a couple of expression pedals with a second tier that the fm9 goes on.

That's probably going to be your biggest challenge. Could just build one out of plywood. Will be heavy AF.

I just put the second expression pedal on the floor.

Yeah but that’s what I want. No sense committing to a big board build that isn’t what I actually want.

I’ve built them before and been able to keep the weight down. I’m capable but that’s not what I want to spend my time doing. I want a board that comes with a case in the dimensions I’m looking for. It’s probably out there, I’m not in a hurry.

Yeahhhh
My main problem with an all modeler rig is that I like turning knobs on dedicated, constant pedals for silly, noisy sounds sometimes, without having to navigate through menus etc*. Or like I have an El Cap, and I love the larger OBNE pedals, and while I’m sure I could get all those sounds in Fractal, not in such a fun way.

Honestly, the Axe would be a better format for me because vertical space isn’t an issue, but out of my price range.

*tbf as far as more complete modelers, I’ve only had an HX Stomp outside of computers, and this is probably more fun on a larger modeler with more knobs

That's my beef with a lot of them too. Helix is honestly better suited for this sort of thing because the capacitive footswitches let you jump to that effect very quickly at least. HX Stadium is going to be even better because you can just tap the fx block on screen. Still, it's not the same as having straight up dedicated knobs for literally everything.

@FractalAudio - The thread about power amp modeling is making me think, is it possible to have a “Disable Preamp” feature? I understand you don’t want to separate preamp and power amp models, but what if a “Disable Preamp” switch forced settings related to preamp modeling to assume the stock values of the Studio Pre model? Would that effectively disable preamp modeling?

We can roughly simulate a power amp model by manually copying settings related to the power amp into the Studio Pre model. What if we could achieve the same effect with just a switch?

Yeah, Stadium really interests me for those reasons. It would actually be a very hard choice for me between the two because Fractal really does a lot of things right that would be important to me if I went to a floor modeler-centric setup, but the interface, longterm support, and captures in the future make Stadium very tempting. I think it’s a bit smaller too, which I like.

But I love a lot of little things about Fractal, like the ability to “mod” the amps. That is probably nothing much to most people, but it interests me so much, and I love the prospect of being able approximate certain boutique amps etc that way (which is nice because idk that Fractal or Line 6 or anyone is going to ever model, say, a Benson). And it also wins in some FX categories that Helix doesn’t excel at for me (and as of now there are no public plans to upgrade those areas of Helix, though I’m sure it’ll come eventually with the increased horsepower)

Also funnily enough, my recent A/B experiments with analog preamps into power amp simulations have had my HX Stomp hooked to my computer and controlled by HX Edit constantly, and I’ve gotten a bit used to that workflow, so that makes Fractal’s onboard UI quirks a little less important to me.

The board/case I have might work for you, you'd just have to buy a riser for it. I was thinking of adding one to this board for some additional pedals-

The board on the bottom with pedals is the one it came with, it's 32"x14", the board the FM9 is on is one I made that's 32"x12", if I had the FM9 on the supplied board there'd be enough room above the FM9 for a pedal riser, not a ton of room and it would overhang on the top of the FM9, but it'd work!

Or you can order it directly from HarmonyCases.com. FixPedalboards.com makes risers.

And yeah, my homemade FM9 pedalboard weighs a fucking ton in comparison to the supplied board. To the point I'm probably going to buy one to replace it as it adds several pounds and that whole case with the FM9 is around 100lbs with everything in it.

That might be the ticket, I’ll have to look at the add on riser stuff and take some measurements. I sent them a note to see what that thing weighs in total. Thanks!
