Fractal Talk

Interesting thing on FM9 forum
Seems a few guys on this update are rolling back as it is to bright

Some are loving it and most notably the guys that own the actual real amps like Marshall’s Freidmans.

It makes me think of DIgital Igloos comment about accuracy vs what many perceive to be what the real amps sound like

Sometimes the more authentic the model is you lose some guys that want the idealized version

You lose the people who have only used digital and don’t know what real amps actually sound like.

Also people who don’t understand the difference between what sounds good at home vs what sounds good live

Is it so bright they can’t just roll back the treble? Or do they just not want to redo presets? Seems odd to me.
That’s what I always post
OMG there is so much bass on my presets now
Have you considered turning down the bass?

I think it’s the same as if I walked into a GC grabbed a guitar and plugged into an amp am I not going to check the tone controls and make adjustments?
Or would I just say the Recto sucks and leave

I generally tilt my head in a curious manner whenever I hear anyone describing just about anything in a modeler as "too" anything. I understand if one compared multiple real amps to the models and through the same cab/IR and everything was brighter/darker by a wide margin, but that's never really what happens.

I've read several times people saying Fractal's sound darker in comparison to other modelers, I don't have an opinion as a result of not using other modelers, but my general thought it "It sounds like what you want it to sound like"

"Bright" or "dark" are poor descriptive terms, IMO. Sometimes new FWs change much more than just EQ—compression, attack, etc.—which terms like "bright" cannot capture. And those changes are much harder to compensate for using basic tone parameters (and as in the recent case of the 5150, even with advanced parameters). Maybe people are not describing the changes accurately, or they simply don't know how to deal with them. Either way, rolling back FWs isn't always the solution people think it is. You'll learn nothing about amps and tone that way. I get that tone chasing can be frustrating when you have your tone dialled in "just right", but imagine owning an actual tube amp and dealing with the 50,000 variables that come with that.

A lot of people just accept that whatever the factory presets sound like is how the unit should be defined. On that front, Fractal tends to offer presets with rolled-off highs, IMHO. I always want more presence and bite, but the performance page allows me to address that quickly and move on.

I hadn’t messed around with the 1987x model much after I got my Ceriatone but made a preset for it last night and man, I think I like it more than the Ceriatone! The Ceriatone definitely has more dirt on it, I’m assuming some of the ‘68 mods lend itself to that. I can get the VH1 thing out of the Treble channel 3/4’s the way up on the Ceriatone, the same dirt isn’t even available on the 87x dimed.

Gonna compare them more closely tonight. Something that cracked me up though; I dialed in the preset from scratch and about an hour in wanted to grab the DynaCab setting I was using for my load box and the head so I saved it as a Block and went back to the 87x preset to find that I dialed in the exact cab/mic spot for the 87x already.

I can’t say for sure that the new beta sounds better/worse than the last release. But I can say I played it a fair amount this weekend and I thought it sounded amazing. Probably better than ever. Definitely produced some very big grins! Not sure how Fractal or anyone else can improve on what we have now. But I’m glad they are trying 😃

I've been playing amps for a few weeks now :bag

You've been around long enough to know it's cyclical. A lot of stuff is great if you give yourself a chance to miss it.
Ahhh man I'll always love FAS. I'll be back using it when we get to gigging here next week? This V is so anti-finnicky compared to the other Marks I've had it's comical. I can play amps at "Axe III into studio monitor" volumes or even lower through a guitar cab and LOVE it. FAS isn't going anywhere but amps have been getting my quality time. I'm basically doing the same thing aka turn on wet filthy Boogie tone and play D tier nu metal riffs through it :satan

WHERE IS THE MARK III
We replaced a roof over the weekend. One little bit to do on that so no road trips. I messaged him Saturday and asked for dates when he can meet. I will be following up later this week as I am ready to do the deal \m/

Turn the bright switch on. It's off by default in that model.

Yeah, Mesa Marks V/VII have so many channels and switches, they're almost modeler-like in their versatility. I think that's why people are really getting into the Synergy modules after that concept kinda floundered on the fringes in the Randall/Egnater days. People still love amps and pushing air, but they don't want their options to be limited by choice - or by volume. With MIDI and IR loading becoming increasingly widespread.....you can have it all, really.
