Fractal Talk

Dave has dealt with the demands of many of the most famous and most respected guitarists on the planet, he’s had his hands in many amps and tweaked the circuits to meet their needs. He’s built a good name for himself and IMO has a good idea of what guitarists want.

I get why people dunk on him, but there are very few other amp techs out there who’ve had their hands in the amps he’s worked on, and also who have kept a roster of happy clients that is similar to his.

His ear and tuning are so great, Ed, that most of the guys he has made Signature Amps for don't even use them. :idk

Neither live nor in the studio.

Much. :stirthepot

Not hating. Just saying.

Same for any other amp company though if we’re being honest. Slash doesn’t use Marshall any more does he? How many has Satriani gone through?

Huh? Literally, everyone who has had a head with him has had it in their live rig and have used them in the studio, Cantrell, Kelliher, Stevens, Lee, Phil X…

Kelliher is using both the Butterslax and a BE-100 live, Stevens has 3 Friedman heads in his rig, dropping 2 CAE heads from his previous rig, it’s all Jake uses and Phil X also has 2 Friedman’s in his rig and one old Marshall. Cantrell was on Friedman’s before he even got his sig.

Right up until Cantrell seemingly got snagged by Bogner. From what little Dave has spoke on it, seems he was caught by surprise and isn’t too thrilled about it either. I think he said the other day he was asked to stop making/selling them entirely instead of re-branding it.

Live sound isn’t really something I give too much of a shit about, but I can vividly remember how insane Cantrells guitars sounded on his Friedman rig when I saw them. And I’ve always loved Howerdell’s Naked tone too. Would they sound awesome through other amps? Absolutely. Friedmans more than hold their own though.

Fair enough if others don’t think those guys have good tone though, it’s ultimately all in the eye (or ear) of the beholder. IMO there’s loads of good examples of Friedmans sounding killer out there. And people seem to love NDSP Plini’s tones whether they know what the amp is or not.

I think it actually might have been Cantrell's live tone on the Black Diamond Sky tour that got Friedman on my radar initially. Howerdel wouldn't be far behind but I can't remember at which point I found out it was a Friedman/Friedman-modded SPL.

AIC played "God Am" on that tour and my show was in an arena, that riff was so damn huge in that place it was insane.
