I will fully admit that even with that, I STILL don't use the FM9 hardware for anything except navigating presets and spamming the Edit button until I get to a block I wanna tweak.
I'm still not comfortable enough to create presets or scenes from scratch, nor can I add blocks to existing patches.
This was released 2 days ago-
His last rig rundown for his solo tour was all Magnatone (2024).
The thing about that thread is nobody has posted any clips of comparison. I would have thought by page 2/3 you would get a "See, here's how it sounds in v7, here's at v8"I read that FM9 thread where the guy was claiming the VC had gotten worse since one of the recent updates. I can empathize to a degree (and he wasn't alone), but what I'm wondering is if anyone knows if it only affects the VC, or anything that uses the Pitch Block, and specifically in the Axe Fx.
What version are you on?I haven't updated in a while, since I'm totally satisfied with my presets as-is, but I'm "New factory presets-curious," which means I'd have to update.
But if there's a chance the Dual Detune in the Pitch Block is gonna be negatively affected, I won't. I like, and use that, effect a lot, and don't want to find out it's borked in any way.
How come? Have they piled you on other things before? And I don't dare go ask this over there!![]()

I think there's been updates over the years where algos may make different trade-offs which satisfy some and displease others. I don't think it's indicative of EOL IMO.If we're in territory where new updates make legacy features go backwards, maybe it's getting near the EOL???

Yeah, as soon as I read your first few words I realized that this is something I could just test myself.I mean if you are curious, what I would do is, first back everything up, including system settings, etc.
Record a sample using the current firmware so you can refer to it.
Make sure you have the firmware version file for the version you are on
Upgrade and test.
Downgrade if not happy, restore your backup.
Yeah I know - it's a lot of work.
No, but with how things played out, I just didn't want to bother rocking that particular boat. It's not all that important to me (getting the new presets. The Dual Delay is.)How come? Have they piled you on other things before?
It's just with this one, it seems (to me) like there's a real tradeoff with DSP starting to happen. The new Comps pull down more processing power, the whole thing with not having enough power according to Cliff to do what needs to be done for the VC to do its thing. I'm paraphrasing from memory...I think there's been updates over the years where algos may make different trade-offs which satisfy some and displease others. I don't think it's indicative of EOL IMO.
And I'm certain Cliff has said something to the effect (maybe it was here somewhere) of not wanting to add certain features that have been heavily requested, because he knows he'd have to "disable" (my word) other functions, and that people would inevitably bitch. Which is understandable, imo. That being said - I do wish that Fractal would come up with a system where algorithm changes where always additive and one as a user could still have access to the old algos without resorting to never updating firmware versions again- that would go a long way to keep patches from sounding different.
I'm sure!Maintaining multiple generations of algorithms within firmware is a true nightmare for support.

@DrewJD82 didn't you have some Whammy issues?
If we're in territory where new updates make legacy features go backwards, maybe it's getting near the EOL???
Thanks. If you get a chance, could you compare it to the III? Assuming you have them both updated past the point where this issue exists. (Ducks for cover. Oh wait, this isn't FAS forum. haha)Yep, when I engage the Pitch block on the Classic Whammy setting bringing the Whammy to 0% still has this chorus-y effect to it it didn’t previously have, which I believe I dealt with with the FM9 last year and ended up assigning the bypass state to an Expression pedal as well, so it’d just turn off when not in use.
For some reason I have it in my head that this didn’t work with the III, but I could be misremembering. Either way, it’d be AWESOME to have any kind improvement to the pitch block, period. I don’t mind assigning the Bypass state to it, but it’d still be cooler to have no noticeable issue when the Whammy is at 0%.
Me neither. I've actually been going back to my presets that had -5 and re-saving them with it bypassed, since I now have a real 7 string.I haven’t used the VC in quite a while, I can’t really comment on that.
#buymoreguitars? There's no winning answer for Cliff or anyone who is updating these devices. Something always gets sacrificed in these processes. I find myself always hitting that gatekeeping button no matter how hard I try not to because nothing else sounds anywhere near as good to my ears with less work in the modeler space. Fractal userbase (myself included) can be super entitled because they are always getting new stuff. It would be a hard standard to live up to.
As far as pitch stuff goes, I've never liked any of it. Even the Boss stuff which has a dedicated pickup or the Drop which has a dull, blunt attack to it a hair bit of latency to it.
That's my go to to which then always generates the replies that they are staying in a room the size of a floor tile, they only use $50 power amps, etc. etc. etc.#buymoreguitars?
Read my mind!#buymoreguitars?

Once I get off my ass and re-string/re-tune/setup my other Majesties for C and D std, I most likely won't use it at all.
It would be nice if it still worked well enough for the occasional half-step down though.
I actually don’t even have the desktop editor installed. My current fm3 has never been connected to a computer, all editing done only on the device.
The best way to learn is to just unplug it from the computer and spend some time with it. Most of it is pretty simple once you get used to it
So now my FM9 will sound better?! Always a good thing. Looking forward to the Angry Chuck the most though.
