Fractal Talk

@Mikael Dez ; total fanboy here. NGL/Duh. But the as far as modeling goes, if zipping around on a touchscreen isn't the most important feature to tick off your checklist; the III is BEAST mode. Best piece of gear there is for tones. Just absolutely luscious and :satan:satan:satan:guinessBonus points for fw drips all the time to keep it fresh \m/

I’m weighing the option of cancelling my Stadium pre order and getting a used Axe FX III mk 1. I do not like how big the FM9 is and I do not want to spend more than 2k on a new device - but it seems they sell on Reverb for a reasonable price.

I’ve never thought of an fm9 as big? Considering its horsepower it is incredibly small. Stadium looks similar in that regard on paper at least. I can’t imagine either being too big for any stage.

Do you prefer a rack unit or a floor unit?

D

Imo not worth it 😬
Totally agree. I had an Axe-Fx 3 Mk2. Never needed more preset space and the ability to save Fullres IRs is largely irrelevant when there are very few sources for those in the first place.

I just don't see Fractal ever doing anything that makes the Mk2 or Turbo models a requirement. They are more likely to release a next gen product instead.

I kind of agree - I don't care about IR storage capacity, or changing the color of the logo. Screen resolution would be cool but not $500 cool.
Yeah it's really not worth it. Didn't stop me up upgrading anyway lol. The FOMO was strong.

Also, I hope the next gen Axe-FX's have some green UI accents, lights or whatever as a reference to the OG units. Those things looked so cool to me in a boring, business-y way like some equipment that you'd find in a server room in an office building.

I would prefer a rack unit so it can go on my desk - the Stadium floor non XL version is what I'm interested in - but even that is bigger than my QC was and will take up more desk space. I don't gig and if I did, I'd look into a foot controller anyway.

I work in IT and when I get to work in the server room I feel like a super cool nerd with all this fancy bleep bloop going on around me lol

Ah… Yeah, I’d never want to use my FM9 on a desk.

When I practice at home, I set the fm9 up on the floor to the side of the desk and run nearly everything off my laptop. I rarely interact with the physical unit unless I want to use my feet to switch something when my hands are tied up.

If you can put it on the floor to the side, the fm9 would be a good fit. If not and you have room for a rack unit, the axe3 would be cool.

I don't understand this. The FM9 is only like inch wider than the rack lol. In theory the rack takes up more room on a desk in the end because of it's depth is almost a foot long compared to only 9 inches on FM9 ;)

RACK:

  • Width: 19.00 inches (482.6 mm)
  • Height: 5.16 inches (131.1 mm)
  • Depth: 11.53 inches (292.87 mm) including front handles and rear jacks
  • Weight: 15 lbs 2.4 oz (6.87 kg)
FM9:

20.2” W. × 3.5” H. × 9.3” D. (51.3cm W. × 8.9cm H. × 23.7cm D.)

The way I've set up my III though on a desk is to have it in the center and then placing a computer monitor on top.

So it's really not taking up what much space.

I can't place anything on top of a FM9 😂

The rack is the superior option for set in your studio and forget

^^^ yeah this is why I’m interested in the rack vs the pedal.

Lol i put my keyboard on top of my FM9. Works great! I used to do the same to helix too! Although by the looks of it, I sure could use a new keyboard as this one is looking bad and wearing away! :rofl

EDIT: Cleaned the keyboard a bit and took a better pic but damn it, still sucks. Definitely need new keyboard some day lol.

Friend of mine that owns a music store locally asked me this morning how I am liking fractal and I told them my opinion that I love it and reminds me of the days of plugging into real amps etc.. They said "I think the Cortex is not as good as the Fractal." I said i hear that complaint a lot and people jumping from cortex over to fractal.

I have mine set up kind of like this. I have an adjustable monitor arm clamped to the back of my desk, and have the height adjusted so it's just above the Axe-FX III. I have a sit stand desk with an adjustable keyboard tray, so I can set the height of everything so that the monitor isn't too high. One of the problems with the Axe-FX III is figuring out where to put it. It's one of the reasons why I switched to a bigger desk.
