Fractal Audio Systems AM4 - Amp Modeler

Page 20.
Analog only for 4 cable. It's also mono only if that matters

I got the vp4 to assist my fm9 and am4 and currently use it at the end.
I wish the spdif could be used as part of the loop pre and post am4 in the digital domain in stereo. Big wish.
I also wish these devices had multiple spdif ins and outs so it I could do dry/DI, different insert points and whatever else.. I don't favor usb as I have a thousand connections already. (Probably more like 15)

SPDIF 4 CM is a current feature request. It's not available now.

I have the VP4 and the AM4 will get real tempting if that gets implemented.
But in addition it'd need it to work when input is USB. I just asked and currently not possible what I want, unless I re-amp in 2 passes

Is this a known bug?
  1. Power on the AM4
  2. Enter Preset Mode with the Select knob or by pressing simultaneously the Home + Save buttons and then 1
  3. When in Preset Mode, press Enter to display the list of all presets
The following image is displayed and the unit freezes, every single time:

AM4_Preset_Bug.jpg

The audio still passes through and is processed but the unit is frozen in that state. It started doing so a few days ago, and a reboot was sufficient to fix the issue. It is now consistently happening, making switching presets impossible.

After a boot, I can browse through the models just fine (pedals, amps, etc.) and can change scenes as well in the "start-up" preset. It is browsing through presets that systematically crashed the unit.

[EDIT]: Firmware 1.01

[EDIT 2]: Doing a full reset fixed this issue (SETUP > Reset > Reset System Parameters + Clear all Presets + Clear all User Cabs). I took the opportunity to update to firmware 1.02 public beta 4. Everything seems to be working fine again. Fingers crossed !

Thanks for any help or feedback.

Looks like the long name bug that was fixed in the latest beta

I always run towards my FedEx guy to help him unload whatever he delivers - I’ve been doing that after I saw my brand new Monitor Audio speakers ($2000+ in value) dumped from a truck so hard that the gravel from my driveway got embedded into a box. FedEx is the F worst!
They save me a lot of money by reducing my willingness to buy things. My AM4 is the first purchase I've made in a while with knowledge that FedEx was likely to be shipping it. And of course tracking went dead cold two days ago two states away. Of course it did.

I can't understand why people still use them.
My vp4 had a target date of a Friday. They didn't show with no update to the system until 10pm. Then it was adjusted to a Sunday. I waited all day. No show. Next day he shows up. He's sitting in his truck at my house. Cars in the driveway, the phone rings. I answer, he states "oh I didn't think anyone was home". He would have left if I didn't run from the door and answer the phone. Fucking idiots.
On their satisfaction survey the first question cites if they rang the doorbell/knocked on the door. Should that even be an option when I have to sign for something?

Put the Fractal store on Amazon and have them deliver. My Amazon delivery guys are awesome. They place things gently, out of the rain. They knock on the door, they are friendly, and I get notified with their location when they are 10 stops away. I love them. Gave them gift cards for Christmas.

Fedex and UPS fine here for me. USPS is the worthless crap majority of the time for me.
Last mile (or few miles) delivery varies extensively by location. I've had good and bad experiences with all three in that regard, but they've always been consistent at a given address. It's the rest of the process, and especially the tracking, where FedEx straight up lies more than any other company I've used. USPS is known for sometimes having things take a wrong hop. FedEx swore up and down that my delivery was "date certain" for today - both in the online tracking and on the phone. The tracking hadn't received an update since the last one two states away. They knew it wasn't coming. But I altered my (train) commute to get close to the pickup location, since a signature is required and I was obviously at work. And they lied until after I stopped by there, then when I called, they "assured" me it'll be here tomorrow - even though tracking doesn't say it will. So I'll adjust my commute again, and do the long walk again. If it doesn't get here until Thursday, when I'm home, I'll have to call Wednesday night and ask them to actually take it to my home. Who knows if they'll actually do that.

They just lie...a lot. That's my beef with FedEx, and why I worry about the condition of anything I get shipped through them. But again, silver linings. It'll save me money.

I can't tell if this is a AM4 issue or if it's just me.

My headphones work fine on my AI and other items, however when I plug them into the AM4, the output seems to favor the right side. Enough that it just sounds off. Is this to be expected? I know the AM has a different headphone input.

I just want to make sure there isn't anything wrong with my unit 😂

Not related (maybe) but I had to rework the setup orientation in my room after it finally hit me that my right ear has been sitting in the pummel zone more than the left.

Shocked Bart Simpson GIF

Hopefully you just have a bum connector. 🤞

Finally received mine yesterday. It took 24 hours to get to Chicago from CT and then it took 3 days to complete the last 3.5 hours of the trip...but at least it's here and I can quit worrying.

Plugged it in to my CLR and was pretty disappointed at the immediate results with the factory presets. I was expecting to love it from the first power chord, based on the great demos so many have posted, but it's very "direct" sounding to me. I've always used amp/cab for stage with modeling but I was hopeful that I would like this with the FRFR. Not ready to throw in the towel just yet, but I guess I have a lot to learn to get what I want from it.

Any tips for making the direct sound more natural? Using roll offs helps but it doesn't have me there yet.

I'd check out the cab section. Sometimes the preset loads with a condenser mic (which I'm not a huge fan of).

There are so many amp models to choose from so look around! If you don't like one, don't dwell on it. Move on to another model.

Which ones have you tried so far?

Modeler run direct to FRFR will sound like a modeler run direct to FRFR. If one is planning on running a modeler direct through their FRFR then demo videos should be demoed with the audio run direct to their FRFR at volume they plan to play guitar while trying their best to imagine they are holding a guitar and playing it, not watching Leon Todd's luscious locks and pearly whites rocking out like the lord and savior he is.
