First rule of capo club is..

I use them quite a bit. It’s all about getting the voicings you need. Very often I’ll come across a piece that just lays better using open string voicings with a capo.

This one is a good example, I performed this once about 5-6 years ago without a capo, but as I was working it up again for an upcoming show I realized I liked the sound of the voicings much better if I used a capo on the 4th fret and took advantage of some open strings.

I used to do some things where I’d use capos that were cut in certain ways and use multiple capos at once to create certain voicings and effects.

A capo is just a tool. If it produces some effect you enjoy it would be silly to not use it because of some sense of pride

And the only thing I use a Capo for is checking relief.

Relatedly, the last couple of times I've used my capo is to hold the slackend strings on the tuning pegs whilst I loosen the goddam Jazzmaster neck so I can adjust the truss rod screw in the neck heel.

What a dumb-ass decision to put the adjustment there. Grrr.

:pitchforks

Great use of a capo though! (y)

In this case ignorance is not bliss, so much as arrogance.

Also, why do some people have to go into thread where they have
limited knowledge and/or experience and then presume they have
something worthwhile and interesting to offer to the discussion by
essentially doing this act:

Season 9 Nbc GIF by The Office

:idk

Dave Grohl uses a Capo. Tom Buckovac uses a Capo. Edward Van Halen
used a Capo.

:hmm

Hell, Jeff Buckley used a Capo.... on what is arguably his and Leonard Cohen's
most iconic song Hallelujah.

I'll trust those kinds of legends, and assume it is a pretty kick-ass tool used
in the right context. :cheers

You have to loosen your entire neck to adjust the truss rod??

Just looked it up, my god. I love the truss rod wheel design best.

so, is like, playing a baritone cheating to get different voicings? or drop tuning? or high tuning? or open tuning? slide playing? prepared guitar? hell.. why isnt your amp tuned flat? it should be gut string classical with a foot rest and a powdered wig.

genuinely puzzled why theres the remotest shred of resistance to revoicing a guitar in ensemble playing anywhere at all. i think your guys guitar teachers should be flogged publicly for the disservice they did to you.

There isn't really. In my case, I think some people conveniently ignored the last line of my prior post:

But the capo has been used in a professional manner; no doubt.

However, none of the opinions in this thread negate the fact that the capo is and has, in a way, been frowned upon. And there are reasons for that (I sussed it out in that same post). And of course, there's always (always) a modicum of ribbing involved... because that's what we do.

Helium - The lead singers capo!

Anyway, people who have to use any instrument other than their own voice and body to make music are all posers! Using a guitar is a crutch to help you make sounds you can't make on your own. So are amps, and pianos, and capos, etc.

So I’m confused now
Capo using rhythm player = poser
Or
Capo using lead player = poser
Maybe both 🤷🏻😂

If you can play leads, you shouldn't need a capo. How're ya gonna bend the strings or divebomb?

Therefore, if you see a lead guitarist using a capo, you know he's faking it cuz he's a poseur.

Rhythm guitarists are expected to use a capo, because they're rhythm guitarists.

Therefore, if you see a rhythm guitarist without a capo, you know he's a poseur.

WHO looks down on capos? nobody posessed of the good sense some imagined deity offered a goose.

at least anyone who isnt living under the illusion that theyre the latest incarnation of paganini. even the best solo players are still comping 90% of the time. presumably in key. i mean, i need five octaves to perform an adequate solo... so i dont play with a capo EVAR
