EMG 81 - fell out of favor (for me)

Yep, I guess by then you‘re back to using EMGs in all your guitars, not just a few. ;)

No, I checked. I also grabbed a new one anyway just to make sure. I think what I was hearing was the compression of the built-in preamp, the #1 complaint of those who don't like EMGs, of course haha. Maybe the X series would do it for me in that one regard, or of course the RetroActives. What would be awesome to me is an active that had the superior noise performance / shielding of actives but with the ability still to load the coils somehow. I think that would mean an active that wasn't buffered, and I don't know if that's a contradition in terms!

I’m not saying you’re wrong with this question, I genuinely don’t know the answer: how can it compress with ±4.5v when the maximum output of the pickup is right around 1.2v? Also, you could try the 24v mod, i built one for my Rhoads but it didn’t make any audible difference.
