E-drums: could they be a common thing for small bands gigs?

Quick update, as expected it sounded absolutely fucking terrible. I’ll put most of the blame on the god-awful zone array system but the electronic drums also sounded garbage.

Fair play though, they did allow us to play the gig and get paid (10k). Worth noting that the electronic drums were a requirement of this particular venue.

Also worth noting that despite splashing out for a decent Roland kit, our drummer was still incredibly pissed off that he had to use it to gig with, as according to him it sounds shit and takes way longer to set up, soundcheck and pack down than it does a regular kit. He mainly uses the electronic kit for private tuition.

I will say, the absolute best live sound I’ve ever heard has fairly consistently been at red rocks. But quite literally “the way the wind blows” can have a dramatic effect on that, especially if you’re higher up in the stands

As far as indoor venues, the “relatively” new mission ballroom is far and above the best indoor venue around here, not just for sound but for view points, concessions, bathroom, etc. the stage can also move to expand and contract to make the capacity range from 2k to 5k. Really a well thought out and designed venue. They knocked it out of the park
Best venue for me would be Royal Albert Hall. Beautiful each time I've been.

My location and drum kit was better than yours

And here it is, a sample form the last gig with an acoustic drum kit and those nasty cymbals. 😂

Gig was open to public but was actually a private party in memory of recently died musician and biker.

We had an old and small analog mixer and drums have been miked with just a yamaha EAD10 stereo mic/trigger and it's module (this thing here https://www.thomann.it/yamaha_ead10_drum_module.htm).

Guitars for all bands fed the PA for some added spread to the audience, not too much. Bass was on its own.

Foh is not perfect but resources were limited

My guitar is very loud untill the voice kicks in and that's how it has to be.

Had a blast playing my mini jubilee very loud, had master at 6. 💕 .

Odin bless rock and roll.

Much better.

It’s the sound guys fault, in exactly the same way that it isn’t the sound guys fault when acoustic drums sound bad
... actually, I agree. If the FOH didn't sound great, it WAS very likely the sound guy!

... and Acoustic drums alone doesn't mean it will sound like crap. LOUD acoustic drums close to vocal mics does. The sound guy can still make a mess though.
Hang on a minute, I was the sound guy!
Ahhh. There we are. The root cause is solved!

Actually, all I hear are cymbals, high hat and snare. It's a crap drum mix by any standard ... and typical of gigs where acoustic drums are used. On a positive note, your LP sounds really good to my ear. I can barely hear the bass.

Note, it may have sounded much better than the phone recording did justice for, but this is what I was talking about. Cymbals, snare and HH way out of whack with the rest of the mix.

You’ve gotta be kidding me? That recording is all guitar and vocals, the drums aren’t in the way at all, and most importantly they sound natural. 100 times better than the edrums clip posted earlier. Given, yeah it’s a phone recording so probably not a good representation of the actual sound in person, but the idea that those cymbals hihat and snare are too loud is laughable. The guitar is almost overpowering the drums completely.
