someone shared this with me this week, and it succinctly explains why so much about “dolby atmos” is absolute bullshit. I have friends (re)mixing songs in atmos for a living, some of whom have invested TONS in their rigs. They know it’s bullshit too but labels are throwing money at it and there’s work to be had.

Considering I’m not a professional and I just write metal songs for myself and friends, I will stick to stereo, which I still haven’t mastered in 30 years :rofl

Until we have an achievable standard and everyone has 5-7 speakers in their recording setup, this will not catch on for home recording people.

In other news water is wet. People consume music in cars, earbuds, phone speakers and Amazon Echo type devices. The average person who wants “improved” audio might slap a soundbar on their Tv or upgrade their echo to a Sonos speaker etc. These new standards that pop up every few years are always dead in the water because they always require more significant investment by the user, added completixty, and all while ignoring that most people largely don’t give a shit enough to overlook those factors. It’s cool in theory but it’s a stupid rabbit hole few will bother with.

Hahahah I finally got a 5.1 system last year, by the time I’m interested in Atmos some other tech will be out.

It’s a business strategy to disintermediate Spotify (via standards) in the music streaming library war.

They know that their consumers will almost never have more than one or two transducers.

I briefly looked into atmos when I was installing my in-wall surround setup a couple years ago.

Same result as when I thought about doing 7.1 years ago at my old house...

5.1 gets the job done, the rest is diminishing returns imo
