Deep Dive into Adam Jones's Tones

There's video popping up in the Mastodon FB group I'm in, he's indeed onstage with them.

Edit, the group is private so I can't share the vid, but here's some shitty screenshots!

Just saw a vid of him very, very comfortably playing the solo to "Pain With No Anchor". Dude looks remarkably comfortable onstage and not like he rushed to learn that in any way. Definitely possible he already knew it, dude's a huge Mastodon fan.
That's awesome. Making the most out of a rough situation and potentially a dream come true for Ben

My attempt at Adan Jones's tone.
Real mics (SM57+SM58) on a real cab (my own 1960BV), no IRs or digital amp modeling, all analog signal.
I think it might be the best heavy tone I have ever recorded.
@MirrorProfiles tagging you as our local studio expert.

Tone chase over, imo. This sounds incredible and I think I would truly stop chasing if I had this sound.

I just got a 1960AV today - what a wonderful cab this is. I'm currently running my Mark VII through it and it adds a bit of that Marshall hair to it.

First everyone was buying rectifiers. Then it was Mark series. Now it’s Superleads.

This is cracking me up. We’re all going to own the same 5 amps. :rofl

I still believe if you could only pick 1 amp to cover Tool's entire catalog, it would be a Recto (doesn't matter the version). Vintage Orange through a LP w/Distortions is just that sound.

I'm a big Mark fan but those amps are too precise and compressed to cop Jones' tone.

Interesting! I do love the Recto but find my 1959 head cranked gets me there closest. Here’s the funny thing about his tone though - with the 3 amps, it’s kind of like a Rorschach test. You can find elements of his tone in a Superlead, Recto, and VH-4. To some extent they all do it.

I do remember thinking “holy shit is he using one of these??!” When I first fired up my OG Recto back in 96. There was a lot less known about his rig back then. Epic tones though.

Patch downloaded, I'll have to check that out later tonight!
Had a quick look through the video, and while choices and settings of the amps, cabs, and post EQ seem perfectly fine, I have few quick points to criticize:

- where's the wah?
- where's the volume pedal?
- afaik AJ uses an old DOD EQ to cut and coax clean-ish sounds from his amps
- placement of delay and flange (both AFTER after the cabs) is irritating

and most of all:

- that guy seems to (obsessively) love his parameter values ending in .0 or 0.5 or other "magic" numbers like 33, which might be either just OCD or a true psycho red flag

Anyhow, the amp/EQ/cab aspect can still be built upon. Nothing surprisingly new in there, tho

I have that OCD a bit, 33 is basically a third so it's a "nice" number, ending in .0 or .5 is cool with me, and I used to crew on an MH-47 so if something is set to 50, I'll make it 47 just because lol. I also like prime numbers (like listening to music in my truck I'll set the volume to 45, 47, 51, or 55 depending on the song's mix volume lol) and I wouldn't be surprised if I'm a psycho :pickle
