I have not given a fat fart about PRS in a LOOOOOONG time.

Was perusing Reverb and stumbled upon these guys. Last I knew the S2’s were USA bodies but the parts and electronics were from the import line. Seems they are all USA hardware and components now as well.

Looks like there was a whole run of single cut McCarty’s with wood library tops and they look fucking awesome. I have to assume these are proper tops and not veneers?

I'd assume veneer.

Nope not Veneers on the S2 line, full tops

Although is PRS actually calling these wood libraries or is that just sellers trying to make a claim? This would be the first I’ve heard of a wood library designation on an S2

All that said, I’ve noticed the s2 594s seem to get nicer tops. I have a particularly nice looking s2 594

The dealer did the 10 guitar run for them to be wood library designated. They all have quilted maple tops and ebony boards.

That is how the wood library works. They have to order a minimum of 5 guitars and they have to have the same or very similar specs. Like with that run they all have the same spec except the color.

Correct. S2's have never been veneers. Maybe not the flashiest tops, but never veneers.

This could very well be Wood Library S2's. PRS does whatever the hell they want for one-off's/short runs. We've got a CE24 with 57/15LT pickups, Gaboon Ebony fretboard, and black satin painted neck right now. It's amazing.

There are a couple in this run that have fabulous tops for sure.

Interesting, so are technically any limited dealer runs considered “wood library” ?

The guy I got my 594 from did say it was part of a limited run and the modcat sticker says “special order”

No. A special order is different. For a guitar to get the wood library designation the wood has to come from the PRS wood library. It is a room in the factory with wood stacked on a bunch of shelves.

They are not veneer. They are proper maple tops. They changed over to the US electronics last year.

How thick does that top have to be to also incorporate that bevel, though?

I just can't seem to reconcile in my mind how you could have that bevel and it not be
a Foto-Finish on top. Unless they found some supremely bendable Quilted Maple. :idk

They use the same thickness of tops that they use on the core and private stock models. Those models have a lot of carving on them. Depending on the finish, you may be able to see the thickness on the side of the guitar, definitely in the pickup routes. When I was there last month I had a number of the tops in my hands. I am going to say they were at least 3/4" to 1" thick.

it’s not bent, it’s cut into shape. They start with a maple blank and carve it to final shape. The s2 carve is just a lot simpler than the standard line carve.

@JasonE is correct.

I didn't really make it clear that this was for the wood library S2. The regular S2 with a maple top is 3/8" after carving. They probably start around 5/8" The carve on the S2 looks a little more severe in pictures than it does in person. The violin carve on the core models is much deeper.
