The internal trim pots makes a big difference. Since the guy who owned the King is the one who prefers darker tones, he probably has left them all the way down.

Way too much treble for my ears and drains the bass.
For what I want, it was a disappointment.

Interesting since the Duke, Prince and King are often criticized for lacking treble, in large part because the internal treble trim pot comes set to minimum by default, but also because they really are not super bright circuits. They do roll off bass though, by design.
