I bought one used. It's easy to use and does a credible Mellotron. It's fun to play around with, but I've never used it with a band. FWIW, I went to a meet and greet at a Crimson show about 5 years ago and Fripp told us that he now uses a $12 Mellotron app on his iPad for live shows.

That actually doesn’t surprise me. The Mellotron sounds aren’t particularly hifi and they’ve been out there in the ether for a while. I had a song years ago where I was just playing 4 notes of a Mellotron cello for 5 minutes, so I can totally respect the iPad solution.
Why so?
I know about these coz some of them were popularized by jazz guitarists.
I remember reading that they track well.
They’re probably not as good as a Boss Synth machine etc.

Switch issues. Power issues. No presets. No midi control. Limited routing that doesn't fit my needs at all. Limited usability within a range of strings/frets. I'll concede these certainly could be a me thing. As irritating as Boss/Roland is; it works for me on the live front.

I’d definitely be using it for different purposes than you- more to blend with crunchy guitar sounds for ambience and rhythm work. I’m drawn to the Cloudburst as well for this. For now I’ve just been doing the freeze trick with the HX reverbs. But, as you know, always looking for the more better.

That's really cool to know. I think I know the app, I've used it too on recordings. Like @ragingplatypi says, they are not hi fi sound samples by any stretch.
