Anyone running EL34s in their Rectifier?

I want to get a 90’s reissue Rectifier, and then put four EL84’s in it with Yellowjackets, just to piss off JT.
Ill Allow It GIF

This is a dick ton of amp, for not very much money.

I grew to dislike mine and it weighs stupid heavy if you are moving it. Then a set of tubes costs stupid as well. Good riddance to mine.

I ran my Dual Rec with KT77s and 6V6s. 6L6s were much better. I should have tried it with E
I’m EL34s all the way in the revision G. It’s not a night and day difference but to my ears the EL34s push the midrange more forward, trim some of the low bass, and generally make things feel crunchier if that’s a thing?

sounds more Mesa with the 6L6s.

OMG. I’m reliving my dumb recto life in this thread. Another dumb thing I read on the internet back then was that you want power tube distortion its way better than preamp distortion. I also read that you can’t pull half the tubes on a triple like you can on a dual to lower the wattage and get that at lower volume. So…. No Bs…. I was really planning to put yellow jackets in my triple rec because supposedly it would be better at lower wattage. Thankfully I eventually decided against it and saved my money, but this was something I seriously contemplated for weeks.

I wish I was making this up. Probably shouldn’t admit to any of this.

Yeah Roadking is too much amp. I don't need that many options.

I've learned that more than a few times with Marks where I love the variety of tones but not the way that switching between them is implemented by Mesa. If you can even switch how you would ideally like to. I get it in most cases but it is what it is. 3 channels on the Multiwatt is pushing it as is. I'd rather run it as a single channel face ripper :satan

I wanted it to marshallize mine, but it really didn’t obviously. I was just a kid reading stuff on the internet I didn’t know what I was doing lol.

D

Haha! I think it can shift the tone and feel some, but won't thin out out the epic low end,
tame all that preamp fizz and sizzle, and bump up the Mids enough to de-Rectify a Recto!

We were all young once. :cheers

I myself recall a lot of that epic silliness masquerading as wisdom, too.

Them there Yellowjackets were proof humanity still has a long, long ways to go.

If we ever resort to those we got the wrong damn amp! :rollsafe

I can understand the desire to push the power section harder and running Class A, and at the time those came out Class A and el84 amps were all the rage.

I remember lots of guys putting them in things like Hot Rod Deville’s hoping it would turn it into a Matchless :grin

Back in the day I put EL34s in my three-channel Dual Rectifier (I have no idea how to tell what "rev" it might be) and never looked back - tighter low end, smoother highs with less fizz and a little more midrange attack as noted previously, it also added a compression to the clean channel that I really liked a lot better than the 6L6. It's a subtle difference to be sure, but at the time I was spending a lot of my free time in the band's rehearsal space alone, tweaking and getting to know that amp really well. I was happiest with EL34s in the power section, running into a Marshall cab with Vintage 30s.

Personally when I think of Mesa tone the 6L6 fits better. If I wanted el34 type tubes I’d go with something else other than Mesa. YMMV

Putting EL34s in a Mesa doesn’t turn it into a different amplifier. It slightly alters the response of the amp. People grossly overestimate the effect power tubes have on guitar amps.

Have you tried EL34s in a dual rectifier?

I really don’t like the sound of EL34s in a dual or triple rectifier, but I adore the sound of EL34s and 6L6s combined in the Road King. More amps should have the option for running both types of power tubes at the same time, it sounds fantastic.

Oh I know it’s subtle but to me the 6L6 feel and little more open sound gives me more of the what find as part of coolness of Mesa sound. Again ymmv
