Anyone have a piano?

I was wondering if any of you have a piano. If so, any upkeep tips which may not be immediately obvious to a newbie?

My wife jumped on a Yamaha GB1K baby grand at a good price in hopes of getting my two young kids to learn. Of course, I want to take advantage of it being in my house.

I’m starting to read up on maintenance, which I know nothing about. I kind of jumped into ownership of it without putting to much thought into the care required. I’ve read that it’s recommended to get it tuned every year. Any opinions? I don’t think the piano was ever tuned by the previous owner, but it is a pretty recent specimen from 2017. I’m putting off getting it checked up but will eventually have to.

It’s been a very fun experience for me so far. It’s very inviting to play as I walk by it. And far more inspiring than any VSTi/sample library that I could trigger from a cheap MIDI keyboard.

Tuning frequency depends on your climate, especially the stability of your indoor climate. Every year or two or more often if it needs it. Otherwise, in a home environment, they need little maintenance if kept clean.

I’m in the Northeast and have pretty big humidity swings. I suppose it will be very obvious when things start going out of tune. The previous owner luckily provided a cover. It looks like a nightmare to clean if it gets dusty under the cover.
