Anybody use a 1x15 cab for guitar?

So here's the thing. I have 2, 15" EVM15Ls that I've had for a looong time. They were in crappy carpet covered, PA reinforcement cabs when I first got them.

I'm thinking of building 2 cabs that are more suited for guitar. The last time I played guitar through a 15" was a 2x15 Bassman cab, but that was just for kicks and the band was using for bass anyways.

My first tube amp, a Crate Vintage Club 50 combo was a 1x15" and I really loved that bold clean and thick tone. But that's really my only significant experience with a 15".

I've been toying with this idea forever and probably should do it sooner than later.

So any of you guys use or tried a 15"?

i have and a friend of mine ran 2 with a 412. its a LOT of air. :D

15s have a kinda funky treble balance, and really zero need for any additional bass. my old bassist would use a mesa road ready 215 with evm-ls and his gk and play his hamer for a song. it sounded okay- but not really very 'guitar-y'.... i think itd need entirely its own eq from a 'normal' guitar cab- but its worth a whack. sheez... fender usedta issue blackfaces with 15" jbls- so im sure its possible!

I think the cab dimensions and design will be the biggest factor. I did demo the EVM15L very briefly in it's original cab. But that cab was at least 14" deep and had a bass port on front. Besides that, it sounded pretty decent with gain, just boomy mainly. I'm fairly familiar with the EV sound as I have/had an EVM12L, 12S, 12" Force.
My curiosity will win over I'm sure, and I'm ok with it turning out and bit quirky and different. Chances are I won't use traditional ply either, it'll probably be a solid wood cab with dove tails, and just a ply baffle. So, it's going to be an experiment on a few different levels.

Yikes. Talk about big, bold, clean , and in yo motherfucking face.

Then again, kind of suits your personality, FA! :grin

:cheers

I have a vintage Fender Blonde 1 x 15. I ain't got no
dang 150lb EV in it, though. :hmm

I'd for sure be porting that cab. The old Fenders are dual ported, I believe.
:chef

It's funny, as I have some old SRO style 12" EVs and every time
I think about doing something with them I am all,

:rofl

I just find that super efficient speaker type with some serious magnet weight
(and depth!) a sound that is very, very select and limited. For me.

But this thread is not about me. You do you.
:beer

Please remember to lift with your legs, k??

You can always mic up a Kick Drum and fire that through them when you are done.
:headbang

:cheers

But heck yeah, If you have the speakers and the wood, and we all know you have the skills,
then why the heck not??!

I'm so in your face! :rofl
Not going to front port this, or these cabs. Probably front loaded (because it's an EV lol), semi-open back. Gonna keep the depth fairly modest too, I think. Height and width probably no greater than 20" finished.

I have a 15" JBL in an open back Fender combo. It sounds a lot like a 12 JBL in an open back cab. Not the exact same but very clearly in the same tonal family. I think there is way more variation in speaker design than between 12" and 15" versions of the same speaker, and cabs can make a bigger difference as well.

12's just seem to be a sweet spot for weight, efficiency, cone stiffness, cab size, and most importantly guitarist familiarity.

I used a Delta Blues 1x15 combo for a while. I liked it, it’s been a while, but IIRC the 15” was smoother and had a little less “character” - for better or worse - than a 12” or a 10”.

From memory, and slightly fuzzy, I seem to remember there being a bit slower attack compared to a typical 12?
