Any P90 Afficiandos In Da House?

Harmonic Design Z90 is the way

They raise my DIY built with AliExpress cheap (but not bad) body and neck into a priceless level.

I'll be getting a P90 guitar in '25 because I played one recently and loved how they sound.

On my shortlist is the Rivolta Combinata and Reverend Contender. Though if my Baum Wingman due next week really is the shit like they say I'll probably get a Baum Carve.

I like the Wolverine Meaner/Mean P90 set. I’ve got them in two guitars. It replaced some Squier stock P90s in a Cabronita Baritone Tele. It gave the guitar a little more aggressive voice without taking away the clean tone.

The stock Squier P90 in the bridge was a little bland to me, maybe a bit thin but not muddy.

The P 90s you have are actually really good ones and not totally representative of P90s in general.
Yeah possibly. And I’m sure there must be some turds out there, but I’ve heard LP Specials w stock Gibson P90s and I even put the run of the mill Seymour Duncan “vintage” P90 in two specials and I’m inclined to say that w the right wiring harness and set up P90’s are hard to screw up, but maybe I’m extrapolating too much.

its pretty easy to make really gross muddy P90s (see the newer Gretsch P90 guitars that are beautiful looking and gross sounding, among others), or to make them sound way too Fendery (see whatever they put in those Harmony Juno guitars).
Ok yeah, I guess if one really strays too far from p90 appropriate specs… I guess anything inherently good could be fooked up 😅.
Arguably some pickups are more P90 shaped objects than P90’s?

Anyone try the Ron Ellus P90s?

Very expensive I think.

My understanding is the JL pickup is much more dynasonic than P90. (Appears to have individual pole pieces like an dynasonic). All of Ron Elisa’s pickups are expensive because massive demand and low volume production - it’s a side gig for him, I believe.

I have a pair of his PAFs not as good as Throbak.

I actually like all of them even the boot camp. In fact that is what I would recommend.

I don't doubt it. All the BK HBs I have are great and I'll soon have them on all my guitars except the Fishman one.

Pickups do matter. Glenn Fricker is so wrong on this. Even with all his caveats.

Removed a Lollar 52 (great pickup) out of the Tele for a Fralin Steel Pole 43. I didn’t go with the noiseless option because I feel like when compromising you lose or weaken another feature…
Never changed the Gibson P90, great out of the gate!
IMO Gibson makes a great P90.

Hey, I love P90s, had a CS LP Special that was a killer guitar.

It’s funny, I always want to take stock Gibson pickups out and put something else in, like Lollars or Bare Knuckles, but with P90s I think Gibsons are still the best. They have the perfect amount of snarl and rock bite and lots of clarity, too.

I agree, I was never even tempted to swap out the stock P90s in mine. They have the perfect bark.

I’m with these gents. IMO Gibson makes some of the best P90s around. The key to really making them work for me is to convert to 50s wiring. I find the volume knob cleanup to be vastly superior with that wiring scheme, and much better preservation of the top end when rolling down volume.

If I were looking to improve my P90s, I’d start by converting to 50s wiring and then replace the pickups only if I’m still not happy.

I found that guitar on Craig's List - it's a 2003, one of the Faded ones. Someone tried to do a TV Yellow finish and it was a mess - it looked like a guitar-shaped school bus.

Because of the botched paint job, I got it for $450, brought it home, stripped it and painted it Arctic White. And when it was done I hated it. I stripped it again, left the back, sides and neck natural and did the top in a fakey Mary Kay finish, which is what you see in the pic.

It's my guilt-free Gibson - I've been beating the crap out of it for nearly 10 years, and every time I take it to a gig people geek out over it.
