66 strat in for refret.

That’s a player grade horror story though.
This is under the pick guard;😱

It sounds pretty good. . It has a hand cut forearm contour too. We have talked about routing that shit out and putting in a block of ash and also cutting off the top portion of the body and replacing it (literally the top third of the body along the join ) with a piece of reclaimed swamp ash ( fuck knows where from.) Then routing it back stock an doing a relic refinish. Expensive but it would add more value than it would cost. I will quote him an “ I don’t want to do it “ price.🤣 trouble is whenever I do that they say “ok when .🙄.

Why is that wall putty stuff there?
What could they route that portion of the body for?
Your guess is as good as mine. Lots of crazy stuff happed in the 70s. I’ve seen a 50 Broardcaster that was sent to Fender in the early 70s for repair and they refinished it in thick poly.

Nice!

When did CBS start making the bigger changes? Was it ‘68 or ‘67?

It seems like a ‘66 could be in the perfect “Goldilocks” zone of being before the big changes, but cheaper because of being post CBS buyout
66 got the bigger head-stock that Hendrix preferred, though I have a Dec 65 that has the bigger later headstock and 3 color burst.

This pic reminded me that I need short skirt knobs for my Sunburst Strat. I went to remove that wrong-period logo from it but the guy nitro’d over the top so my current plan is to yank all the frets out and sand all the lacquer off and start fresh. I’ll probably re-radius to 12” while I’m at it.

I’d like to have an overspray relic finish on it when I’m done, but that’s most certainly getting deeper into relic work than I should get into.
Those knobs are hard to find now unless they reissue them for the 70th anniversary model.

Jimi didn’t care, he just played new stuff mostly.
Jimi played new stuff because he often destroyed them LOL!

It's believed Jimi thought the bigger headstock improved sustain, which is possible since it's more mass where the strings connect, though who knows (I only saw him once...).

I seriously jealous on that one.
