YouTube jumps shark on Christmas

YouTube has been aggressively pushing ads lately. To the point where I feel like I’m fighting them more than enjoying the content.

So this morning I wanted to watch a tutorial on a guitar solo…and got an ad for an incontinence product instead. Yeah, Merry Christmas to you too, YouTube….and bye.

Since YouTube is my primary source of watchable entertainment and I generally only keep one streaming platform at a time, I got YouTube Premium. When I started seeing ads every 5 minutes in 3-hour documentaries, fuuuunk dat.

AdGuard is my choice for ad blocking, works on all devices. For YT on mobile I do use a Revanced patched version on Android.

I have thought about going premium for YT but I think that is exactly what they want. I have noticed that the frequency of the ads has increased but they also recently increased the price of premium, which also made me think they are just trying to get more subscriptions at the higher price.

$12 a month for access to the Library of Alexandria is a no brainer for me. haven't seen a single ad since 2020, and the embedded ones i can fast forward. plus i can lock my phone and videos keep going.
One thing I need to do is dig into the YT Music more. I had a thought that I could turn off Spotify and use that. It works with Android Auto so I can use it in my car and on my motorcycle like I do Spotify. If their music app works for me, it would make it worth swapping the two and trying YT Premium.

I have YT Premium, so no ads, because same as @DrewJD82, YT is my main source of viewing these days.

But, I did have the app open on my iPad yesterday and was looking at the recommended feed, thinking, what a stream of utter crap. :rofl

It was a screen full of Cordy's clickbait titles and dramatic expressions and gestures, along with sad, morose-faced images of Beato questioning existence, or modern music, or something along those lines. I love both those guy's channels - although I watch Cordy less and less and skip all Beato's rants - but I was thinking, "these guys are intelligent and have to be aware of the ridiculousness of the thumbnail stills, clickbait titles, and melodramatic BS-ing"... but I guess what works, works, and it's unfortunately the nature of the YT algorithm monster in which they have to thrive and survive.

I always wonder how much of that “the algorithm demands it” is actual reality and how many of these videos are just getting views because established YouTubers have a base that will watch whatever they put out. I’d imagine any youtuber with a decent amount of followers could test it out by not doing any of that shit and seeing how many views they get.

At the same time, I have to wonder how many people are hate-clicking just due to that shit, in the same way that Howard Stern’s biggest listening base in the 90’s was people who wanted him off the radio.
