Yamaha TAG3 C TransAcoustic Guitar

So cool to know that you worked on this DI. I haven’t been this excited about a piece of gear in a LONG time. It’s always great to see real innovation in acoustic guitars. My plan is to get one at some point and install the Tronical tuners if possible for the ultimate writing/jamming guitar!
 
I will be very biased since I also helped on the project, but still...

This is an incredibly fun guitar.

I pick this guitar up more than any of my others at home.

Hopefully everyone here can give it a go and I hope it puts a big fat smile on your face as it does for me.

As always, huge kudos to DI and the rest of the Yamaha/YGG team.

Are you allowed to go into more details about the project and the challenges etc? I would love to hear more and I cannot wait to get one. They all sold out INSTANTLY!
 
I have a Yamaha FS-TA TransAcoustic, and I've spent the past couple years telling anyone who would listen, you gotta check out this guitar. When I play it outside in my front yard, I often have dudes come up and say "wait, how are you doing that?" And as others have said, even turned off, it's a perfectly good acoustic guitar that feels and sounds nice. As I'm mostly an electric player, I only have two acoustics that I play regularly, the Yamaha and a Martin D-18 Golden Era which cost 7x as much, and damned if I don't play that Yamaha more often (there's other reasons for this, but I'm try'na make a point here).

Only hangup is I got my FS-TA for $500, so the idea of dropping $1,700 on an improved version isn't gonna fly right now.

I have the FS-TA too, and I love it. I think the Yamaha FG and FS guitars are wonderful.
 
I have the ac3r and ac5r as well as the fgc-ta and fgc800 and like them all… even my taylor 114ce is sweet and am considering the fsc-ta but think it sounds thinner then the fgc-ta and more midrangey where as the fgc-ta is more balanced and the highs are sweeter as are the lows. So i do like the fsc-ta but may be not for me… now i did order the tag3-ta because all the vids of it amaze me even more and yes the 1700$ is alot but i am shying away from electrics and modelers to more acoustic’s. Its a phase i am in…
 
I just bought one of these. I had it for four days and I returned it.
I was really let down by the guitar itself when played acoustically and the weight which is really heavy
No, I still have my FGTA Tran acoustic, and it actually sounded better as an acoustic than the TAG3, which shocked me.
The effects on the TAG3 were OK. I didn’t see a huge difference in the reverb and the chorus versus the FGTA. I did hook my phone up through Bluetooth and use the app which was OK but this is actually not a lot of versatility in these effects. I understand they have two resonators instead of one and there’s probably another board in there so the weight is substantially more than the FGTa to me.

I really had high expectations for this and after watching a lot of of the YouTube videos and any video I could get my hands on I was excited to at least try it, but I was expecting to keep it
I thought the fit and finish were very good and I think the whole battery charger cable thing is weird. I don’t know why they just didn’t use USB-C because if you lose that cable, you’re gonna be really in trouble.
There will definitely be a lot of people that will love that thing and probably keep it and think it’s great but acoustically to me it sounds very dead. The action was very good, but it just didn’t have any punch or dimension sounding when you played it as an acoustic was very Flat and dead and I think that’s maybe because of all the gear that’s inside that thing to weigh it down and is attached to maybe the top or the sides or somewhere
It’s a very good concept and it was interesting but it’s just not for me. I did play with the looper, but it sounded very tiny on playback, even though I messed with the volume and I wonder why they even bother using real mahogany wood because they could’ve used laminated and probably shaved off a couple hundred bucks or more off the priceso it would be more accessible to a lot of different people but as it is at $1800 I think it’s overpriced and not worth it

Good review, thanks Timbuck.

I think when I get my next acoustic, I’ll stick with my original idea of getting the guitar I want (probably Seagull again) and the Tonewood 2 amp.

I just bought before the tag a seagull s6 1982 acoustic and for the 350 new I paid( had 140$ credits with gc that I used so after those credits) it sounded better then the tag3c. And I am not returning. A lot of people give seagulls a hard time saying their necks are unstable or something like that but this seagull I bought is an incredible guitar plays well it sounds great and it’s a cedar top which usually I use spruce tops, but I was surprised at how full it sounds and still bright. I think the back sides arewild cherry laminated, but I don’t really care about that because a lot of companies at this point know how to do lamination really well.

Anecdotally speaking, of course, but I've literally never seen an unstable/twisted/humped neck Seagull before. Mine's been on a hanger for over 20 years, and it's awesome. Can't say the same for similarly priced Taylors or Martins.

Martins are notorious for neck issues.. I have never bonded with martins.

Um "notorious" is a pretty dramatic way of saying it. You make it sound like Martin necks are like Gibson headstocks. Martin products and customer service are incredibly good.

Eh, Martins above a certain price point are good. They make a lot of garbage too.
