Wise words!

He seems snobby and I don't like his coat :hmm

He is a jazz guitarist. Of course he is snobby and can’t simultaneously dress casually and with any sense of style without a woman or gay friend dressing him every morning. The doesn’t mean he is wrong, it just adds a little extra sting to the message.

thers some truth in that.. but by the same token, i think it only speaks to certain types of music. solos and improvisation arent present everywhere.. i dont use solos myself. it doesnt mean i suck at tasteful musical expression- i just dont hear that stuff as part of music i make.

i think hes right though, in that people settle for norms or 'acceptable forms' and it doesnt much feed my soul... i think standards are fine- and in form music theyre the litmus test. but id love MORE genuine weirdness and out of the box and less 'great musicianship'... just genuine music MAKING that feels like its made by genuinely involved humans not trying to turn it into somebody elses indexable genre or career.

I’ll occasionally watch a Instagram video to see what’s going on but seriously I’d rather listen to songs. A good song is the cake and a good solo is the icing. Too many people worry about icing any more and nobody gives shit about the cake.
He is talking about how to play improvised solos with relevance. Go watch him talk about chord progressions and harmony. He is about giving you the tools to compose intelligent informed music not doing it for you. If the song or the solo is bad it’s still your fault. But there is objective good and bad in music and you liking it is not the deciding factor.
This is the point of the video.
