Just finished a practice session with this 1970s Gretsch Chet Atkins "Super Axe." I found it in a shop in Tokyo in May, attracted to the on-board effectors (phaser and compressor). I'm rehearsing to use it for a solo guitar set in September for an event at a regional venue. Until recently, I've been playing mostly jazz at jam sessions, using a Gibson archtop. The feel and sound of the Gretsch is quite different, so for the next couple weeks I'll only play the Gretsch and give the archtop a break.

For past solo sets, a compressor was always on (usual a tube based one that is more a limiter.) But the Gretsch compressor is "super" compression. I can do legato forever without even barely hitting a string. But I also like to dig in for some bite once in a while, so I don't think it'd work as always on; even at its lowest setting. Part of my rehearsal, beyond the tunes I plan to play, involves integrating effectors, so for now I'm just using the two on-board effectors (along with a DOD Rubberneck). The Gretsch has Lindy Fralin P-90s, with which the previous owner replaced the stock PAF humbuckers. The onboard phaser is more vibey than a traditional phaser, and I plan to use that on some songs.

I do these solo sets 2-3 times a year, mostly just for fun. I'm not looking for "my sound" or anything in particular for covering songs. I've used a different guitar and different effectors for each set, so the sets become opportunities to play around with different gear. For a solo set last March, it was a Kawai Moonsault (which also has on-board effectors), along with a Mad Professor board. This time, I'd like to see what the Gretsch effectors can do, and leave open the question of using others later.

Didn’t know there was a ā€œkseā€ pickup, is that something new?

Can’t say I listen to KSE much in 2025 but riffs from my curse and rose of sharyn are still go to test riffs for any modern high gain tones :rofl

It's a Fishman Fluence sig pickup.

Hot as fuck at band practice today!

This guitar is really starting to feel broken in and I love it more each time I pick it up. I really take the Evertune for granted; I've been recording with it all week, probably 2-3 hours a night, had that practice today and I'm recording now, I haven't touched a tuning peg since I put these strings on. Actually, I remember re-setting the zone on the D string last night (when they stretch they can slip into that "bending feels funny" zone that people think is a defect of the Evertune). I gotta say, despite some pretty intense bends I haven't snapped a string on this thing yet.

Though my fretting hand slid right off the strings like a slip and slide several times today. I need to get some talcum powder and a couple towels to keep on my amp. I now recall exactly why I used to take 60 grit paper to my necks and i might end up sanding this one down as well.
