What Amp Are You Playing Today?

Tracking guitars and the Mark III is a monster. Huge focused crunch tones with a Les Paul. Plug in a Tele and it’s a whole other palette of sounds. The clean is killer too.

Line 6 Catalyst CX 100 combo. I got it primarily to practice fundamentals, Jazz, Funk and R&B. It's proven to be very good for both.

It's fine as a stand alone amp but I'm also looking forward to using it as a pedal platform and as an amp for my FM9.

Not mine pictured.

Just got back from a jazz jam session, and played through a Roland Jazz Chorus JC-90 in the venue backline. Set it mostly flat rolling off a bit of bass and mid to avoid feedback, and added a splash of reverb. Great amps, but JCs can get a little glassy at times, so I adjusted the treble and the volume a bit on my Gibson Johnny Smith, mainly to taste while comping or soloing.

My amps played yesterday…

Living room: Super Reverb (attenuated with a JohnH M4/M2 hybrid) that my wife has shockingly allowed to stay in the living room for a couple years now! There is something about an old cranked Super that never fails to make me smile, even with the volume tamed down quite a bit.

Basement: The last few days I have played an SMS pre-amp paired with a MosValve 982. I haven’t played the SMS in a long time and I have a pair of MosValve 962’s that get used more often than the 982 for reamping and digital, but I broke out the 982 because I was thinking it was finally time to replace the flakey volume pot. Of course, the threat of replacement had that pot on its best behavior. It is still probably going to go, but I might try a heavy Deoxit bath first.

The SMS is a clean machine unless you hit it really hard, and even then it doesn’t do power amp distortion like a full amp and it doesn’t to preamp distortion anywhere near like a “modern” high gain amp, but the combo with a MosValve or old McIntosh does do cleans and pedal platform stuff really well. I forgot how fun the SMS plus MosValve can be when turned up a bit and you can enjoy the dynamics.

It is truly a mystery. If I leave a mini pedal on the desk for 24 hours, I hear about it, but the Super has for some reason been deemed acceptable. I brought it up to work on a tremolo tick and rebias while watching TV, and she commented about it then, but after I put it back together and tested it, no further complaints!

Kudos to you. I wonder if my wife will notice the twin reverb in the living room?

Worth a shot!

In more than 2 decades of marriage my wife has never failed to INSTANTLY notice one of my Twins in the living room and react negatively, and even the ever stylish tweed Bassman didn't last 30 seconds as an multi-use end table. 4x12 cabs? NO CHANCE!!!! So, my advice, if the Twin doesn't work for you, get yourself a BF Super. It is worth a try! Worst case, you have a Super to play while not getting any action. :D

You make a compelling argument! :ROFLMAO:
