Very first quick impressions, wanted to check the unit on its own, no editor, no NAM files, just the onboard stuff.
- 100/100 presets => trash. Overcompressed and partially fx-laden silly stuff. Don't try to impress me with FX when the FX are just serviceable but no better (which was to be expected, but in that case, FX washed sounds are just a dumb idea). Had to stop with the presets after 30 or so, it's just no fun.
- Amps: Some decent, some really bad. The Bassmen are both fine for me, the UK50 and 800 are ok. Anything heavier is pretty meh IMO - but I knew that before and don't need heavy stuff. Could play pretty much any gig with just the Bassman and the 800 plus some variations.
- Boosts and drives are usable. Nothing to write home about but nothing terribly bad, either.
- FX are, well, usable too. Again obviously nothing to write home about.
- On unit editing: Very easy. No need for a manual in case you're remotely familiar with digital FX units. There's not much parameters to tweak anyway and after 2 minutes you know how to get there. Created a kinda gig ready patch after 5 minutes with the unit (medium drive /w extra drive on one switch, the other switch adding a boost and some delay).
- I already wish there was an option to limit the patch up/down thing to even just 2. That way I could use one switch for patch cycling and the other for a lead modification. No idea whether Valeton would listen to such suggestions, but I'll give it a try.
- Excellent support of external footswitches.
- Headphone out seems powerful enough to drive pretty much any models.
Mini resume so far: This is already worth its money as a backup unit. Even without having checked NAM import, this would save my ass in pretty much any situation. Battery operation is an incredibly nice bonus for me, so far I didn't plug it in anywhere. just hanging on the sofa at my parents-in-law place.
On to loading some NAM stuff and what not.
