Trouble with boss rc-500 loop station

I need a little help in the operation of this thing. if I start a track, say play 1 chord, it the button again, it loops as I would expect. If I try playing several chord changes (G->C->Am->D), when I get back to G and hit the button, it doesn't stop recording and playing back like it did when I just played one chord. It is like it is waiting several more bars and then it stops and starts playing back.

Is there some setting that tells it to record for so many bars?

Is the rhythm running set to a specific tempo/bpm?

Bought it used but I did a reset on it. How do I check for the rhythm? I see the display go from left to right in what looks like 4 bars. How do I stop this?
