I appreciate that it isn't doing Fender cleans and Marshall overdrive because I feel like there's so many products out there that do that.

I was mainly thinking of amps in this regard. Most high gainers have a Fender based clean channel. Even my Mark V's ch1 and ch2 kinda do the Fender vs Marshall thing even though ch2 isn't exactly like Marshall (less sizzle).

Then for more old school tones the Bogner Goldfinger is basically a Blackface circuit for cleans and various flavors of Marshall on the OD channel. Great amp! The BluGuitar Amp 1 ME is the same (and what made me sell the Bogner).

I'd love to see things that combine say Vox + Marshall. The 3rd Power Kitchen Sink is the only thing that comes to mind that does that.

I'm aware of those. Owned a MkIV with a marshall-ized yellow channel, too.
But I'd really like something at this form factor.

I've had the IR-X since literally the day it came out and have used it on and off. I really like the functionality of the unit, but there are a couple drawbacks. First is the boost section which I find kind of useless as it's really difficult to tweak. Second is the effects loop which is purely mono, which makes it a lot less useful as a headphone device.

The Tone King pedals are a little different platform that has more IO including stereo effects loop, which seems far more useful for headphones. Also having stereo reverb onboard should give a much nicer headphone experience standalone. And there's no tiny knobs on the side to mess with.

So I'm very intrigued by the pedal, but honestly I wasn't blown away by the tones I heard. Not sure if the gain would get modern enough for my tastes, and I'd rather see an Imperial clean channel. But I like the WYSIWYG design.

On the Midi CC messages, yeah they were missing from the IR-X and I had to reference back to a Facebook post to find them. Very weird. Worked great but it's weird.

I bought the Imperial pedal last year. I really like it. I don't really feel the need to get the new Royalist pedal. I have an IR-D to pair with the Imperial so I have a wide range of tones between those two pedals. They compliment each other well. The only thing that has me intrigued with the Royalist is how close to the IR-D does it get. They are both supposedly based on the JTM45 and tweaked from there.

It looks unserviceable like a cell phone and will probably end up in a landfill in a few years when the DSP fails or gets zapped and it is "uneconomically repairable".

I understand why- there is a lot packed into the device and to hit the price it has to be largely assembled by machine. I understand it but I can still lament.

The pretty much applicable to all surface mount component jobs, no?
