The crescendoing and dissipating in waves thing seems to be normal for those with tinnitus.
I have never really even thought about thinking what might "trigger" it or even diminish it. Just
kind of assumed it comes and goes, rises and falls, on its own.
One thing that seems to be helping this past year is just using my air pods with the noise cancellation on. Even without any sound going. It really helps rest my ears I think, especially in certain environments. I can listen to music at lower volumes too.
