Thought my PRS had a dead spot

At practice last night I was highly disturbed to find that the 15th fret on the low E string was completely dead. I was shocked and confused as I'm skeptical that I would not have hit that note yet in the last few months

Upon closer investigation turned out the string itself had a a little dent in it right on that fret. I've never seen/experienced that before. Definitely will be something I'll check in the future if I'm trying a guitar and think it has a dead spot

What brand of strings are we talkin about should we avoid, exactly?

I haven't changed the strings (excluding a high E that I broke) since I picked it up so who knows :sofa

Going to throw a full set of trusted ernie balls on there later today

Dude!!!! I had this happen before and almost got a guitar re-fretted over it!!!

It was my Ibanez SZ, I put strings on it and the 6th fret on the low E was buzzing out, but at full tension you couldn’t see any kind of defect. I first assumed it developed a twist in the neck overnight, because it wasn’t just buzzing, it was buzzing to a mute. Raised the action and no luck, brought it down to the tech to look at it, he took out a level and a fret rocker, everything was good and the frets were in fine condition across the neck, but I was willing to pay for a re-fret right there.

I can’t remember who mentioned it now, I wish I could, but someone asked if I possibly bent the strings when putting them on and an image flashed in my mind of a kink n the low E I didn’t think anything of. I take the tension off the string and sure as shit that kink was right there at the 6th fret. I think I was freaking out for 2-3 days over that. :rofl

I was happy to impart that tip to someone on TGP a couple years back, it’s like that one time you know the answer to something after seeing 200 other people guess it wrong.

Funny that I had a similar situation this past week.

Decided to give Elixir Optiwebs a try on my Sabre. Seemed great for a few weeks until I started getting a weird warbling on the D and G from 2nd to 5th frets.

Increased relief and action substantially to no avail. Totally confused, they sounded kind of like a buzz acoustically but at this point I was positive there was no fret contact to cause a buzz.

Took @DrewJD82 's advice to remove the string tension and found a nasty warping wave up and down those 2 strings, less so but still apparent on the others.

I use a "string stretcha", maybe I got too physical with it - or were they "NOS", emphasis on the "O"? I think I'm reasonable with stretching.

Put new EB Paradigms back on and problem solved. Relief back to a split twat hair (STH) and action 3/64" wound to 2/64" ish.
