The Peavey 5150 (OG) Model Thread

I had to turn the output on the 6505 down a little - but otherwise I didn't change any settings between the two (I copied your settings from your Nolly screenshot) -

I don't know why they turned out so quiet compared to your uploads - all levels in Logic seemed fine to me but it's a clear difference, and I also like your Nolly tone better than the Nolly tone I recorded.

Nolly sounds a touch more aggressive in the upper mids and leaner in the lows. I quite like the 6505 model, but IMO it just needs the depth lowered a bit. It's often a fine tuning act between bass and resonance depending on guitar tuning, the key of the song, the riff etc. The song in my example weirdly didnt have much palm muting which sometimes allows for a different kind of low end to sounding with a lot of mutes.

It's actually pretty cool having variations of the same amp, kind of like how you can have multiple speakers captured from the same cab.

Despite an extended love affair with the 50w 5153 amps, this is still my favorite amp of all time.

I think that sums up my sentiment on that line just the same, actually. I'm kinda bummed to have the rear-view outlook on the 5153 I have now, but it is what it is.

Damn, after listening to the sound samples, I actually feel that desire for a real amp again. As if I hadn't tried that a million times before and ended up going back to modelling every single time... But a Peavey Invective (basically a 6505+ with integrated Tube Screamer and noise gate) would be bloody awesome. With a chorus in the loop (the amp has two 9V outlets on the back, so I wouldn't even need a power supply) it would already cover 99% of my needs.
Invective is a sick amp. It also has a better clean than the 5150/6605 if that matters to you.

The 5153s are still amazing imo. I still have two custom head shells in white (pure white, not ivory) I don’t know what to do with lol.

But yeah, there’s just something special about the OG’s rawness. That goes for its tone, front panel layout, and design imo. It’s minimum form, maximum function.

I watched this earlier and it is a perfect example of my issue with many of the modelers currently. They all have this smoothed over, recorded type tone to them. I assume they feel like that also. They dont sound bad, but they are just missing the punch and edge the real amp has.

I have been comparing my Fractal and ToneX captures lately, and I just cant deny that the ToneX is much more punchy and alive. It dont have the features, but it just has a better tone that is more fun to play.

This is also making me miss the old 5150s. I had a few Block Logos for years. Loved those amps, but after years I kind of got sick of the grating sound in the highs. I have a 50w 5153 now that I like a lot, because it is basically that sound but less grating. I have thought about grabbing another old Peavey, but it would probably make more sense to just grab a new 100w Stealth 5153.

It’s hard to get away from that because it’s kinda inherent to the way we experience these things. The only way around it is to run a (good) model through a real power amp and cab I guess.

I am getting much better results making ToneX captures of my own amps with my settings. When I play the model through a computer with IRs, or run them back through a solid state poweramp and cab, they are VERY close to the tone and feel of my tube amps. Far closer than I can ever get with a modeler like Fractal or Line 6. Much closer low end chug instead of a smooshed together low end.

The new ToneX / NAM tech has really been swaying me over the last year.

Fractal was actually kind of disappointing to me. Had to go way more extreme with settings and even then I couldn’t really get the low end as hefty/lively, nor the aggressive upper mids quite the same. It’s close enough but the areas where it was falling short are the specific things I’m looking for in a decent 5150
Amen. Something has been up with the Block Letter 5150 models in the Fractal-verse for a while now, and they seem to have lost their aggressive attack. Despite this being brought up and addressed by Cliff in one of the recent FWs, I still don't think that the Block Letter 5150 in the latest FW sounds as aggressive as the older ones from about a year ago without some advanced parameter gymnastics. Complaining too much about it will invoke the ire of the forum gods that be, so I've just moved on from chasing that upper mid attack in the Block Letter 5150 now.
