The Mothership - Pedalboard Build Pt3

The board is spectacular. 😲

Now, let's get practical, can you lift that thing off the ground? 😂

woah.

Light Pedal
Total dice throw. I wanted to add a real spring reverb pedal since I have all the other reverb variants covered elsewhere. I landed on this since the SurfyBear stuff wouldn’t fit with the real estate I had open. Base spring reverb sounds good. All the clank and jangle. I throw on some trem with it and it’s full on burning man acid trip vibes. The sweep mode is really cool too, to get some extra movement. I don’t know if I can get high enough to use some of the more esoteric modes, but soon? I’m only scratching the surface with it, but I think it will survive the gauntlet.
I also get stuck on the tremolo setting a lot! Though lately I’ve been moving my Light pedal from the fx loop to before the amp and blasting away on the freaky modes with lots of fuzz/dist/gain. Soooo much fun just cranking out weird noises with this pedal!

That’s how I run it, straight into amp. It’s the last in chain for the mono side of things. I really dig it. Super unique.

I thought the pedal was too aggressively out there at first, but then realized the drive control is really important. If you keep that low to moderate it’s just a really nice spring. Once you start getting aggressive with the drive it morphs into a more character/experimental verb.

I’ve been having fun with it, especially paired with a tremolo etc. Normally spring and trem aren’t my thing, but one of the first versions of the board I did I went with all-in with the core pedals I had lying around, got done building it, then realized I had this elaborate board of two core tones. :ROFLMAO: Granted those were my favorite base tones, but the board wasn’t really giving me a chance to get too creative or fresh. (6 chorus and flanger pedals sounds cool in theory :rofl ) That’s when I started mixing in a couple of the oddballs like the Light Pedal, and it’s been really fun to figure out how to integrate them into whatever it is I do.

HOMEPLAYERS UNITE! No fucking lifting stuff damn it.... at all!!!!

(wife, children, animals, house appliances and normal stuff that has to be lifted are the exception of course. TGF will not take responsibility for divorces or angry wifes calling because of lazy husbands)

Great looking board 👌
Are you using the Flip Flop mode on your Quartermaster 10 ?

I havent been using flip flop mode on the QM. I tested it out, but don’t keep it engaged. Seems like it would be great for live applications but this is really more of a studio board and I stack pedals n some loops so flip flop isn’t as applicable for my use.

Wow. Killer board! I know full well how much work those are to plan and build. Well done!

Thanks dude. I had fun planning and building it. I got about halfway into the initial build before I stopped for a rethink. There are some things you don’t really consider until you’re using it, both from a wiring and a pedal selection perspective, but that ending up helping me make some better decisions with this revision.

I’m going to add a little side flatboard with a Whammy and expression pedal that I can easily detach, but otherwise I think it’s largely dialed in now.

That's a very cool board. I really like thr strymon deco and wish I'd never sold mine. Do you still use your vp4 or are you mostly using single pedals at the minute?

I didn’t board the VP4 since I have the AxeFX already integrated in my rack, so I can get my FAS fix on the backend whenever recording or going direct.

But I also didn’t board it because what inevitably happens is you just end up using it for everything:ROFLMAO: It’s fun to break out the box with different pedals and approaches etc.

Approaching “final” form after some messing about this evening:

Added a little side board to host the Whammy and a “demo” loop for when I want to try a new drive or fuzz. It’s easy to remove from the main board when I’m not in whammy spazz mode. Which leaves the main board compact for fly dates. :ROFLMAO:

I need to reprogram the Atom for some of the newer pedal movement, but otherwise I’m nearing the finish line for now.

Outs
Lost + Found. I just couldn’t gel with it. There were a couple cool algos like the grain tumbler, and the degradation on the tape delay, but the overall vibe of the pedal just didn’t do it for me. Some of the algos work in symmetry together, but some of the core algos I just wouldn’t ever turn to in isolation. I went ahead and sold while the market was still hot.

Ins
Reverse Mode C. I kind of dig CB delays and this one is pretty awesome so far. Have had it for a couple days now and I dig just using the standard delay, but crushing it with their modulation options. Really cool experimenting with the mod types and the offset parameter. The reverse delay is solid. I’m not a huge fan of the octave up bleep bleep bloop shit, but the sequencer believe it or not had some fairly nice subtle bird chirp effects if you leave it fairly close to defaults.

Epiphanies
  1. Finding out the pedals you really dig. I think I could reduce this board to just the BP1, Shallow Water, Thermae, DC2 and Cloudburst and be completely content.
  2. I have more fun playing a pedalboard into a combo than anything else in my rig. There is something really fun about sitting down in front of a pedal board and twisting dials, and tapping on stuff. I think if I ever downsized, (insert eye roll meme) it would be to just a pedal board and a combo amp.

Pedalboard into a combo is my happy place. There’s nothing more fun than “playing” a pedalboard
