Fenix LP Custom. It's an interesting mix of LP Custom and Standard styles with the 3 layer binding on body and headstock, but trapezoid inlays, flame maple top and rosewood fretboard. The top is a full blown flame maple top and not a veneer! I bought this guitar super cheap used because it's a very unknown brand. Came in set neck and bolt-on versions, mine's a set neck. Made in South Korea, 1990s.

I've put plenty of work making it to my liking. The original electronics were a pile of crap, so I installed Mastertone active pickups on it. The stock hardware was good: Gotoh bridge, tailpiece and tuners. Leveled the frets, replaced the nut.

There’s a Fenix LP Custom local to me and I knew I had heard the brand name before but couldn’t remember where, now I remember!

If it had an ebony board/set neck I’d totally go for it, but I’m pretty sure it’s rosewood/bolt-on.

I need to go further down the MIJ LP rabbit hole, I know there’s a few other brands aside from the more known ones like Greco, Edwards and Tokai.

It’s worth checking out Heritage guitars made buy the Gibson builders that didn’t want to move from the old factory in Kalamazoo .

They’re on my radar, but I don’t think they’re drastically cheaper than Gibsons, are they? I think they still have a good amount of the machines Gibson used to use, don’t they?

Yes they still use the old building but have a nice modern new one across the road.
They are not very hospitable if you turn up from the UK and ask if they can give you a tour of the old building ?
Sorry no😳
They are now having a more affordable range made in China.
The one above in my pictures is one of those.

Man, I'm REALLY falling in love with LP's hard lately. I've already been a fan for the last couple years but in the last 2 weeks I feel like I'm getting obsessed like I've been with Strats most my life. The more time goes on the more I find myself wanting something from the Murphy Lab....or at least MJT, I need a nitro-finished LP!

The few Murphy Labs I’ve played - have felt super fake to me? They were all aged, so maybe light or no aging is better. If you look at the pic of the back of the headstock on my 225 you see loads of checking. That level of checking exists all over the back of the neck BUT, it feels wildly different on the neck compared to headstock - play-wear has worn the checking smooth on the neck where you can feel all the cracks, etc. on the back of the headstock. On the Murphy Labs, the checking all over the guitar was like the checking on the back of the headstock - you could feel each crack in the finish so it felt like flakes where every vintage GibsonI have played most of the checking has smoothed over so that it still just feels like a single solid finish layer.

Damn! The chances of me having the cash for a Murphy Lab anytime soon are pretty dang slim, so I'll likely make do with sending something off to MJT to get refinished, where they buff out the finish checking so it won't feel like that what you described when it shows up!

Every time I go on Reverb and do the Greco/Burny/Edwards search I get all kinds of refinish ideas. I'd love to snag a beat to shit $500-$700 70's Greco and just have MJT make it look good!

@DrewJD82 I really must thank you again for bringing Edwards guitars to my attention with your posts. I knew nothing about them before, but I've had my LPS for a year now and hardly play any of my other guitars anymore. The Edwards is perhaps the best guitar I've ever owned.

I have a lightly aged 2021 58 Murphy. I play it quite a lot. No flaking, although it may happen. Environment/storage can also cause issues.

It's a roll of the dice with aging process and nitro. I will say it sounds better than any CS LP that I own.

That's a special one.

:love
I’d love a two pickup version someday, but you really need to play the individual guitar with these old ones - some are great and worth their asking price as musical instruments; others are cool, but only really worth the asking price as a collectible piece of history.

This one’s still out there…
