The Free Plugin Thread

Haha - if it was that, you better shouldn't have. I mean, we all like to come across a bit not-so-old-fart-ish here and there, don't we?
I'm almost 20 years older than my
20 year old son. I transcend all age and maturity and spend my days rolling around with babies and toddlers.

Using “teh” I’d probably guess you were in high school in the 00s? 😂
Whats my age again?

Ok, I gotta admit that I'm pretty much a mixing dummy. Or rather: I have very little interest in all these fine details and what not.
Having said that, I still sometimes like to add a bit more of pressure/impact to, say, drums.
If you are like me and don't want to deal with anything more nerdy, grab yourself Loudmax and throw it on your drum bus, then just drag the upper slider to the left until things are fine. I'm using this since a long time already and it never gets old for me. Obviously works on some other things as well.
Completely free, no registration required, just download and install.
I prefer using compressors for the drum bus, but Loudmax is great, been using it as my "mastering" limiter for years. Super simple and no weird artifacts.

Free for now (no idea whether it'll remain free): UAD Showtime '64 Tube Amp

Just tried it, works quite nicely on its own and with some pedals in front. Very efficient tone stack.
Minor downside: 0.7ms of additional latency @ 44.1kHz operation.

Needs: Some rudimentary questions answered, a UA account, UA Connect software installed.

Free New Eventide Reverb (for a limited time)

Tried it out already and didn't post it because I find the general sound to be rather unfancy. Would possibly be a neat idea if it was a MIDI-controlled plugin, but with a static set of notes you can enhance or de-enhance, it's rather limited.

I didn't find it very exiting either. I dug the "Pianoverb" preset. Cool overtones.

Another interesting delay, "Matra" from Karanyi Sounds. Not yet entirely sure about what exactly it's doing, but it's adding some harmonic stuff, some wash, some saturation and what not. Possibly best to just fool around with it.
Note: There seems to be no realy mix control, so you might rather want to check it on a bus.

Needs: A valid mail adress that they will send the key to.

Edit: And as the link automatically becomes "Get Vapor Dimension For Free" (it's their actual promo thing), don't let yourself irritate by that. Or just grab the thing as well (I'll get back in a bit when I tried it out).

Now that the Computer Music mag doesn't exactly exist anymore, U-He decided to make his dedicated mag version "ZebraCM" free for the public. IMO easily one of the best free kinda subtractive synths around, sort of easy to get your head around, too (assuming you know a little about how synths generally work).
Comes with a whole bunch of partially pretty impressive presets, demonstrating what this thing is capable of.

I own the full version as well but can see myself using this pretty often, though, as it's just more accessible.

And while you're at the U-He page, make sure to grab all the other freebies as well, they're all just excellent.

All supporting all common platforms, all macOS silicon-native. They all have nice user guides (if required) as well.

Zero registration requirements, just download and install.

Btw, that Protoverb thing is a very interesting thing. It's randomly generating models and delay lines (so make absolutely sure to save all useful outcomes as a preset instantly as you will never be able to recreate it otherwise) and when you stumble over something interesting (good or bad), you can copy the code, click on the "Send Code" button and will be taken to the website where you can describe what you like or don't like, so they can possibly build a new reverb thing based on that database one day. Pretty wicked idea.

You can as well just alter the code shown (typy any text and click apply) and surprise yourself.

I have a feeling it'll be like Waves' CLA Epic plugin and its simpler free counterpart. The implication from what I read is that it's the simplified version of what will be introduced. Probably smart marketing on their part.

I think the idea has potential; I liked what it did for piano, it could just be a matter of finding the right source and the right context.
