The fear and GAS and panic rising when...

Grab a Mesa with switchable power options and then you can go up or down as needed. Geet a 5watter
and you are locked into that never enough headroom reality. :idk
I have never found switchable power output to be anything like moving down to an actual 5-12 watt 1 or two small bottle amp. At all.

I had the tiny 3rd Power Vox thingy a few years ago. Trying to remember what it was called.......

..... ???

It was half of the British Dream in a single channel offering. Dream Solo perhaps?

I liked my Mesa TA-30 better.... so I guess boutique is not always best. Or I am lowbrow.

Oh man, just joking around, jd. Not meant to be taken seriously..... let alone literally. :beer

I genuinely do think tiny (5w and less) amps tend to have a short shelf life.... both for me and others who
I have known who have purchased them.

In theory, great. Fill a niche. But if someone already has a 15w option that seems to get more use even
in home settings than a 5w amp with an 8" speaker. :idk
The 8” speaker is the problem, not the 5 watts.

For a few days I had my hands on … I don’t remember the name of it, 100 watt head; plexi dirt channel; twin reverb clean channel. Dirty channe was great; clean channel pretty lifeless.

A friend has a Spanky and that thing is killer for people that want to gig a Princeton - almost as loud/headroom as a deluxe, but feel of a Princeton.

TA-30 is KILLER. Definitely agree boutique isn’t always better (see my above thoughts on Tone King). But a mess TA-30 is also a far cry from that little Epi!! :rofl

Eew. Tone King.

I’ve been demoing the TK Imperial plug-in (I’m on-again-off-again in the market for a clean combo) and I gotta say I’m not digging it, but it may just be the plugin because the quality demos I’ve heard online sound better than what I’m coaxing out it. (Maybe its been Neural’dTM)

I had a falcon grande, demos of which I looooved. Was REALLY stiff. Maybe the solid state rectifier? But I think it was just the overall amp design. Also, the ‘verb was unusable for anything but super ambient stuff. - it was like the dwell was internally cranked such that it always had an extremely long tail no matter where you had the mix.

@la szum Whilst I accept that you could ultimately be proved right ( I will eat my hat! ), my current stance is: Not all 5w amps are the same and whilst a good deal of them sound shitty, are built shitty and have zero headroom... there are a handful of higher quality offerings that buck the trend.

Is it me or has 3rd Power gone through so many different amp models?

Yes, I've been following them for a while and they switch up their models all the time and discontinue a lot of them too. They've just brought out another iteration of the Clean Sink which is their Fender / Vox blendable voice offering. I quite like the look and sound of that. But the Wooly Coats Spanky stuff is usually more up my alley.

Stiff is a good way to put it. Plus I’m also finding the MK breaks up really earlier than I thought, and is surprisingly a bit darker than I expected. I’ve seriously checked input levels about 87 times because the demos sound like a fuller Deluxe, but I’m not getting that at all. I doubt I’ll see one in the wild to demo, so ugh…..
