The DID YOU KNOW? thread

Did you know the easiest way to open a banana is to squeeze the bottom with your thumb and forefinger ?
That’s how Gorilla's and Chimps do it.
I noticed that in a vid a long time ago -- how they opened the banana from the bottom. Ever since then that's how I've done it and it works like a charm. Trying to pull open from the stem doesn't always go as planned. I trust the apes on this one. :grin

Did you know Adam Jones and Tom Morello were Teenage Buddies, and used to be in a
band together in the greater Chicago area, and after both moved to LA (separately), they
ended up in iconic bands, each with their own unique playing styles, that didn't sound like
anything before them or since?

I had no idea. Pretty neat stuff. :idk

Apparently Billy Corgan was in the same area at the same time...

Did you know that wrapping the stems of bananas can keep them fresh longer?

Wrapping the stems slows down the release of ethylene gas, which is naturally produced by the fruit—especially from the stem area—as it ripens. By reducing ethylene exposure to the rest of the banana, the ripening process is delayed, helping the bananas stay yellow and firm longer.

Bonus: fruit flies are attracted to ethylene gas, so wrapping your banana stems may also help keep them under control.

On a similar note, grocery stores use the ethylene gas from bananas to ripen other fruits when necessary. They store the bananas in close proximity to the fruits that need some ripening!

Where do those little bastards come from? :rofl Seriously! I've had 'em in wintertime. Meaning, aren't they outside, underground somewhere, hibernating? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Or in a cocoon, waiting to hatch?

They must have a helluva sensitive nose!

I've had them the past 2 winters. Never before that. Used to just get them
around August/September, and then they would die off and disappear. :idk

I have an handehld Vac and suck them up, but there they are again the
next day.

They usually hitch a ride home from the grocery store with me during the warmer months. I used to use traps and other methods to get rid of them, but I go through so much produce, it’s almost impossible to get rid of them completely.

So you are saying that their presence = healthy eating habits? :idk

Man, I love this perspective and reframing. Thanks! :chef :beer

When we have fruit on the ground here at the property, that is when we see the fruit flies decide they want to be in the house as well ;~(( When that happens, my method to get rid of them is as such.

Take a soda/water bottle and cut it about halfway down. In the bottom section, put 1 part water, 1 part apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish washing soap. Mix it up a bit. Take the top half of the bottle and turn it upside down and insert into the bottom half of the bottle. Ideally, you want the lip of the original top to be just above (1/4 inch or so) the line of liquid you have put into the bottom section. Put some tape around the edges if you like to hold the two pieces together (though not necessary in most cases). The fruit flies are attracted to the smell of the apple cider vinegar. They go in through the lip of the bottle down into that area and they have trouble finding their way out. They land on the liquid and the slipperiness from the dish soap prevents them from getting back out and the drown ;~)) When we have a group in the house, I can catch as many as 20 or more in the first day. I never catch them all, but can make a huge dent in their population and as a consequence, be much more comfortable around the house even though a few may still remain. Those that do remain need to beware of King Kong on top of the Empire State building (aka Moondog Wily at his desk). I have pretty quick reflexes (just ask my cats) so I kill a lot of them with my cat like instincts and agility ;~))

Being from the Chicago area, yes, I did know that. Local legends, along with Billy Corgan, as well as the dipshits from Disturbed.

I am pretty sure they got into my Houseplants, and that is why most days I'll Vac a couple
through the Wormhole and into another Dimension. :idk

Big box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot are the worst in that regard.

Any time I’ve purchased a plant from those places, they’ve been full of bugs.
