Yeah, worrying over prices is a deeply ingrained (inherited) habit I’m trying hard to break. It’s usually at least somewhat irrational.

Last time I “scored” on a GC Mesa it was an early rev TA-30 with switching problems. Not something I can fix myself, and I still haven’t managed to find a buyer for it.

My overall count is not likely to increase, but I could totally see this as my having “broken the seal”, such that I start trading up to more and more expensive variations over time. (Each time at an inevitable loss/ “rental fee”.)

MkIIc++++ reissue here I come? :D

Right now there are two amps I would buy if I had the money to dish out, a 90s Dual Rec rev F/G to compare to the Single or a Mark V 90w to compare to my 35 lol

There are a number of Marshall’s I’d like to try for myself now that I’ve caught that bug (via the poor man’s DSL gateway drug.) Atomic had plenty of that (Superleads, JCM800s, etc.) in their inventory along with this mkV, but I only had a few minutes in store to work up a strategy. (And some of those Marshall’s are NMVs, which would have made for challenging test drives. Probably completely unrealistic for my typical “use cases” anyway, for the very same reason.)

The Mark V Extreme Mode was really fun. I don't miss it because IIC and IV are super beefy on this one. Plus IIB mode is just nice and chunky for mid-gain. Then you have VII mode which is boomy and muddy on it's own, but put a 33 or Horizon drive in front of it and the bright overdrive really cleans it up and makes it super heavy.

Enjoy your Mark V ch2 Edge/Crunch first! The Edge can be very Plexi-ish, and Crunch is more in the JCM800 territory. Plug into some Greenbacks and there's definitely fairly Marshallish tones to be had.

Euge Valovirta has a few great videos on the subject:





I was cranking my Mark V through the Fryette PS-100 a few days ago and if you drive the amp to poweramp distortion it certainly gets even more Marshallish as more of that sizzle creeps in. You have to leave the preamp gain pretty low or else it's muddy.

Without an attenuator, try the Variac power + 10W mode and crank the ch2 Master to something like 2-3 o'clock with the fx loop circuitry disabled. It's still pretty loud but bearable.

I feel it doesn't sound better if you crank the master all the way. Personally I'll stick to using it without the attenuator, and just setting appropriate volumes with channel + output volumes.

I thought it might be a good idea to read this thread as well… Then I noticed: 71 pages!!!

Can anyone summarize in just a few sentences what’s preferable about the VII over the V, and/or vice-versa?
