I had no idea there was a Mesa German division, much less that it was independent and mismanaged until bankruptcy and then resulted in a series of suits by Deutsche Bank - it really sucks trying to keep a business afloat.

In my opinion, John Petrucci's tone is the holy grail. When I hear his live playing, that's the sound that keeps me awake at night.


I'm not a Dream Theater fanboy—I don't hate them by any means—but the keyboards and vocals just aren't my thing. I should karaoke all their music to strip those out so I could actually enjoy it.


Anyway, I recently picked up a used JP6 and wanted to dial in his settings. I knew Ola had a video breaking down John's rig, and there are tons of other sources out there, but I ended up binge-watching a bunch of Mesa Boogie videos featuring him. They were demoing the JP2C, him testing the Mark V 25 and his tone is just killer.


The whole thing reignited my love for the JP2C, and I decided not to sell it after all. The Mark V and JP2C are pure .


Those two amps would make for some seriously fun stereo rigs, no doubt, but truth be told, the FM9 makes stereo setups so much easier, and it nails both amps spot-on.

For me it his 90s guitar tone. Awake, ACOS, and the second LTE album. The beginning of Acid Rain is my favorite guitar tone. That, the tone in The Mirror and Lie, and then Fear Factory’s entire Demanufacture album.

The tones he's just pulling out of thin air on this vid are INSANE and a perfect example of I may have NEVER, EVER liked LaBrie but you can't deny those tones

For that style of music, they seem pretty darn perfect.

Granted, I'm the opposite of a metal player (though I have written & produced heavy ad tracks and played on them), but the Mark VII does what I do, too, and does it extremely well.

Easily the most versatile all-around=great amp I've owned (and my dad bought me my first amp in...yeah...1966, have had plenty more).

I JUST missed a $600 triaxis at GC but DID NOT miss the VTwin rack I just snagged for $275.

I would LOVE Ola's modded V-Twin to be something you could pickup off the shelf or get modded to those specs.

I have a REALLY good tech here. Honestly at the price I got it I’ll probably just flip it if I’m not into it, but I think it’s gonna make a hell of a stereo option with the studio preamp and 2:90.
