Can someone please explain IR based reverb to me like the apparent idiot that I am? I thought they were just for cabs…
WTF, you learn something everyday I guess.
Thank you @Jarick !Reverb was actually one of the first impulse response uses. Called convolution reverb. Made by miking up a space and then playing some kind of burst of noise and recording how it decays. Made for very realistic reverbs in plugins. Then someone realized it could capture the tone of a speaker which was never done properly just with EQ. And that moved guitar amp modeling way forward.
I hated the original big sky and this is no better.Anyone rocking one of these at the moment? What do you think of it? Does it do the Cloudburst sound 100%, or is the Cloudburst pedal still its own thing?
I like old school pcm 42 reverb not fake sounding glitzy shit
Does explain why he was disappointed with a reverb pedal, though.A PCM 42 is a delay and not even a reverb at all.
My mistake I meant 60.A PCM 42 is a delay and not even a reverb at all.
Every reverb is basically a scattershot of delays.A PCM 42 is a delay and not even a reverb at all.
No no no. That's EQ!Every reverb is basically a scattershot of delays.
Tbf, the PCM 60 is LTI (budget model that doesn’t have the modulation of other Lexicons), so IR’s do a good job of approximating it….No no no. That's EQ!
I was a bit disappointed with the Strymon reverbs too honesty. For FX/non realistic spaces it was fine but for anything else it sounded weird/not great to me.Some reverbs actually sound like an environment and some sound like an effect. It depends on what you’re looking for. Personally I want a reverb to sound like natural reverb if I want it too. This unit is definitely an effect and turned on it slightly alters the eq on the dry signal. Horrible.
For me the BigSky MX is a tough sell because of it's high price.Generally speaking, for guitar, I'm not looking for realistic from reverbs. If I want realistic, I'd rather go to a real space.
Instead I'm usually looking for character.
The entire premise of my question was, I'm pondering if there is a simpler reverb I could replace my MercuryX with.
I'm a big fan of the Source Audio Ventris. I did a nigh on 2 hour video years ago exploring every single engine! It isn't a bad shout.. I just know that if I ever did want to get a bit more complex with midi switching and shit like that, that it isn't the best option. Still.... that isn't where my head is at right now anyway. For me the BigSky MX is a tough sell because of it's high price.
Have you considered the SA Ventris for complex but reasonably easy from the front panel, or maybe something like the Strymon Nightsky for "build your own ambient thingy by turning knobs"?
I'm also "team character" for reverb pedals. Real space sounding reverbs have their place for e.g modelers where you might be recording the whole thing direct but usually I'm playing pedals through a real cab in a real room so any reverb is just adding an effect to what I already hear.
The SA Collider has been my do-it-all-but-not-too-complex reverb for a while, and I use the Flint V2 as my don't-make-me-think-about-it reverb that just does its thing.
