STANLEY KUBRICK

VERY close call between my favourite director with Kubrick and Lynch, I find both endlessly fascinating.

Kubrick’s insane attention to detail and uncompromising focus and dedication to get what he needs. There’s a stubbornness to prove his point too that I admire - showing he can make expensive films that turn a profit as well as films on a budget that make money.

From the sounds of things Kubrick could be extremely demanding from those he was working with - even to the point of loyal collaborators declining offers to work with him again because they know it’ll be so draining. Lynch always came across extremely likeable but potentially at the expense of his family life (in contrast to Kubrick).

I love the fact that Kubrick had a pilots licence and was petrified of flying - probably a strong sign of being a control freak (even if he denied it). I love that with anything Kubrick put his name to, he REALLY went all in and committed to it. When going through his films for the first time you really get the feeling that each film has received the same amount of care and focus to make it. Barry Lyndon is just the most astonishing looking film I’ve ever seen.

Lynch telling the story of Kubrick saying Eraserhead was his favourite film, and also that Lynch declined an invite to meet him at his estate in St Albans because he’d heard a rumour that he records all his conversations with people and that weirded him out always makes me laugh. Similarly, Kubrick having video tapes of Seinfeld and the Simpsons flown to England in the 90’s is just great.

So hard to pick a favourite Kubrick film. 2001 is so hard to look past because it’s just an insane achievement on every level. The Shining is something I can just watch over and over. And Eyes Wide Shut might be my favourite of all. Those 3 alone make me weak in the knees and that’s not taking into account Dr Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon or Full Metal Jacket.

What’s everyone’s favourite Kubrick film? Any stories or facts about him you find interesting?

Eyes Wide Shut is such an amazing film. Really didn't get the respect it deserved when it premiered imho.

The Shining will always hold a special place in my heart. I love Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange too.

Lynch is probably my all time favourite director, and I consider Mulholland Drive to be the best movie ever made.

I was a bit slow on getting onto Eyes Wide Shut and after watching it I couldn’t believe that people had mixed views on it.

Much like Lynch, it’s quite interesting how their work was completely misunderstood upon release and often took time for people to judge them on their own merit.

It’s hard to pick my favourite Lynch film, but I feel like all of Lynch’s prior work led him to being able to make Inland Empire. And with Kubrick, I don’t think Eyes Wide Shut could exist without him making his previous films.

Fire Walk With Me is another film that baffles me how it got a poor reception on release. It’s just a straight up masterpiece, possibly my favourite Lynch film.

I still remember being about 5, and watching The Shining in my uncle's front yard. Right across the street was a drive-in theater. :grin
I was a bit freaked out. :ROFLMAO:

A Clockwork Orange, FMJ, 2001... all great.

A Clockwork Orange used to be my #1 film period, so certainly my favorite Mr. K film! They are all fantastic though and if I were to be stranded on an island and told that I had to pick one director's films to watch for the rest of my life, I think I would have to go with the Stan Man!!

Cruise and Kidman have the sexual chemistry of a can of salmon. I won't watch Eyes Wide Shut because of that fact. Edited for; is it worth a shot, despite that fact?
It’s so fucking worth it. Kubrick forced them to be apart during filming and refused to let Tom Cruise know what was happening in Kidman’s fantasy/sex scenes just to make him even more paranoid. Probably didn’t help their marriage. Cruise got the Shelley Duvall treatment from Kubrick by all accounts.

The way it’s shot is incredible, the sense of anxiety is up there with the Shining. I’d say in a lot of ways I think the Shining is his most similar film to EWS, I can draw quite a lot of parallels between the two. Music is iconic too.

A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and The Shining are my favorites, but IDT there is anything he, or Lynch, did that I did not like.

Tarantino, Guy Ritchie, Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola round out the rest of the best IMO. I could watch any movie by these guys and find value in it. Many new movies are just rehashes of already done story lines, or direct copies.

This youtube channel is well worth checking out for OCD level research on the background of Kubricks films. Just binge the lot and enjoy:

I've avoided it forever. It's came up in the discussion here in the past few years as a worthy film but I just haven't pulled the trigger. I'll have to give it a shot.

I will say on the Lynch note I did try giving Mulholland Drive another go here a few weeks back and it did not grab me. Like; SUPER "Hey look it's the beginning of the 2000s!" vibes in a way that really just didn't speak to me.

Lord. I couldn't imagine ever being so wrong.
