Speaker recommendations?

A friend gave me few empty cabs for free. I don't think they're anything super swish or anything, but they'll certainly be usable. I kind of want some darker more vintage or bluesy sounding speakers in one of them. But fuck if I know what to get.

Pretty sure the bottom is a Harley Benton 2x12, would've had V30's in it at some point. Top one is a vintage 1970's cab from what I gather. Both unloaded of course.
Those amps are pretty freaking cool, too! More pics needed.

G-12 65 Hs are bluesy sounding; I think that's what R. Ford uses with his Dumble (or used to use at some point).

I am reminded of the time I bought an old Marshall cab from a squat, for like £50. I'm pretty sure it was a 90's one. It had two greenbacks in it, but one of them was damaged. The other one worked fine. But I never did anything with it. Years later I was moving house and couldn't take the cab, so I just gave it away.

UGHHHHH IDIOT.

I'm guessing for 100watt heads, I should be looking at speakers with higher than 25watt ratings ?

Celestion G12H‑75 Creamback could a good shout, then.

A 100w (rated) Marshall head (depending on model/year) can put out in the neighborhood of 180 watts if pushed. Other brands will vary but figure a tube amp dirty could be putting out 1.5 to 2x the clean rated power.

Speakers and speaker brands vary in how much margin is built into their ratings, and also speakers tend to handle clean signals and lots of transients a lot better than solid sustained square waves.

The general rule of thumb of having speakers rated for 2x the power the amp is rated will usually work pretty well. Many players could get away with lower rated speakers, but also plenty of speakers have been blown despite meeting this rule. YMMV.

For me, a 2x12 with 75w rated Celestions would be no problem with a 100w head. If you play louder and heavier distortion it could be.

I loaded an empty 4x12 with two EVH model Celestion’s on top, and two Greenbacks on bottom. Could not be happier with it. Only downside is the 80w limit.

Depends on how loud you are running them. I've been using my 100W BluGuitar with 4x10 10" Greenbacks (100W total power handling) for years. I know I'll never push it so hard that it'd be an issue.

I'd probably see if you can score some Alnico Golds (50W) on the used market for the 2x12. Love those.

Otherwise I'd probably look at something from Eminence or WGS, especially used. Both brands tend to be more affordable than Celestion just because they're not as popular.
