Some pedals incoming

I agree. I'd give both a place post fuzz/pitch, but still before the amp.
Fuzz is something I am so not optimized to be able to do, as far as the rest of my normal rig, but still would love to try. Humbuckers, it wouldn't be in front of the chain, I don't want to try the Carcosa (which seems to be the only fuzz anyone recommends with a humbucker loaded guitar).

Try the Carcosa.

I always rotate back to the Tone Wicker Muff. Might be the viable option, yet again :satan
Yeah I have the big deluxe russian muff with the wicker/parametric mid EQ thing and its pretty cool. My unexpected favorite feature is the blend knob. Blending the muff fuzz tone in to an otherwise normal guitar signal going to a broken up amp sounds REALLY interesting. I need to use that pedal more. It helps with the "this fuzz is a mute box in a live band environment" problem.

Keep in mind all fuzz is not the same. A Big Muff and a Fuzz Face are about as similar as a Deluxe Reverb and a JCM800.

Just like amps, there are various camps/categories of fuzz and they’re all very different from one another.

There are a few other options out there for fuzz that works anywhere in the signal chain. Silktone and the Benson Germanium Fuzz are two that come to mind

I mainly play humbuckers and have no issues using fuzz, but I feel drawn towards variations/clones/derivatives of the following "brethren":

- Super Fuzz or FZ-2
- MKII Bender
- Foxx Tone Machine

A run-of-the-mill Big Muff, for example, doesn't yield the wanted results.

MkII Bender is probably my favorite fuzz for humbuckers. I hate Big Muffs with humbuckers.

Fuzz option discussions are 100% guaranteed to make me keep not buying them. I kind of like that fact, actually. Given the rabbit hole they themselves occupy :nails

Hot take: get yourself a Source Audio drive pedal (LA Lady, Kingmaker, Aftershock) and see which fuzzes float yer boat. And yes, they're surprisingly close.

After realizing Gilmour was able to get all those killer tones over the years running everything in front of his amps I had a bit more enthusiasm for doing the same. The Plexi definitely aided in that, being that the loop will just make everything sound like distorted ass (though I haven’t actually tried it myself….gotta do that).

Ideally, I’d put the delays after the amp just because they’re easier to manage/dial in, but chorus, flange, phase and vibe is all up front. Most of the time in the Fractal stuff it’s all in front of the amp as well, though I’ve put some choruses after it. Trem effects I almost always put after the amp because I prefer the hard start/stop effect and that seems to do the trick.

I'll add to the chorus of folks recommending the Carcossa. I run it after OD pedals and usually use humbucker-loaded guitars, and it reacts shockingly well. The Carcossa is one of the best-sounding fuzz pedals ever. It is always a tie-up between that and a superfuzz for me, although a superfuzz reacts more favourably to single coils. I have a DeadFX I Can't Feel My Face Super Fuzz (mouthfull but sounds as mig as the name is) that I run pre-Carcossa but post-OD and it delivers everything I need to in spades. More traditional Fuzz Faces never worked for me for some reason, regardless of guitar choice. Big Muffs are always "rhythm guitar" fuzzes for me. They sound great on leads/single note stuff, no doubt, but I leave that to RATs and BD-2s instead.

Not to pull things off track, but is anyone else using flange/phasers out front?

My whole musical life everything I’ve read says to put it in the loop. It’s never worked for me. I always end up with some metallic jet thing happening. They both work so much better out front. Probably my fav modulations.

Always in front, indeed.

Look at the King Tone Mini Fuzz v2. It gives you "all" the fuzz you need.

Carcosa also doesn’t care about buffer or no buffer or where it’s placed which adds to its usefulness. It just takes whatever you put into it, and owns it.

Like a cat… the cat owns you and the house and your wife. It’s like… I want to hate our cat because he’s a dumb bastard. But he owns us. It is what it is.
