Rumor mill: John Mayer plugin coming soon?

I love this song but this is the only such song of his in his catalogue (afaik), so not a great represntation of his usual musical output. I think I just find him to be an SRV-LARPer (which is essentially an exercise in LARPing as someone who was a Hendrix-LARPer) who got way too big making radio-friendly stuff to actually find the time and effort to make the music he might have made if he didn't have the burden of being a mainstream pop artist.
The groove of that song, stylistically, was a nod to Jimi imo, although Mayer's licks and tone came out SRV'ish.
But on SRV -- he certainly is famous for playing some of Jimi tunes, and of course praised him as an influence and dressed the part to some extent... but he really sounded nothing like Jimi. I'm sure he would have agreed with that. Stevie was steeped in the Blues, which was obvious and if anything was closer to Albert King in style. He'd probably agree with that. But he had his own thing, you know as soon as you hear one lick. Unfortunately/Fortunately, for a lot of players from the 90's that liked blues/blues rock, it's hard not to play SRV licks. JM suffers from it, and even I do on occasion, lol. There are many, many notable players that do. Most are just showing respect while others were/are blatant clones.

What amps and fx is he known for, any speculation about what amps and party tricks they’d use for his suite

Two Rock/Dumble of course. He has used many Fender amps early on. Vibroking, Vibroverb, Super Reverb. Stills brings out the Vibroverb occasionally.

Basically his board is drives and delays early on.

Keeley katana
Blue breaker
Blues driver
Klon
Ts10
For delays a mainstay in his board is the WH Aquapuss. He always seem to pair it with other ones like the T-Rex Replica, Providence Chronos, Cornish TES and lately the Korg SDD.

He has used quite a few different effects over the years. He has used the usual suspects given his bluesy background like Fuzz, Vibe, Leslie and lately Chorus. He has also used some more uncommon stuff for some pretty memorable hooks in specific songs like Envelope filter, Step Sequencer, EHX POG, EHX microsynth, etc.

Spring reverb, both on amps and dedicated units. He has also used a Bricasti live quite a bit.

Some player are just such cornerstones of certain styles it's nearly impossible to get away from it. You could say every 80's shredder is a VH clone just as easily.

Man, I love the Try album. I was so disappointed when he decided playing with the Dead was where he’d get the guitar playing out of his system as opposed to doing more with the Trio.

I would love to hear more from the Trio and see them live, but its not just John and D&C, they are three busy guys!

Plus the interest in Blues had subsided. SRV busted the door back open again.

Just as had Johnny Winter before.
This stuff is cyclical.

Could this be it?

I can’t think of anything I’ve heard him play that couldn’t have been him using a HotRod Deluxe.
And I hate that amp for no logical reason other than it should be the photograph in the dictionary fo illustrate the definition of ‘generic’.

Not trying to dump on JM, he’s a talented player and songwriter. I’m not buying any of his work because it doesn’t move me, ever, but I can recognize talent.
However, I don’t recognize why he needs a plug in because he always sounds the same and never sounds like the gear had any kind of signature to it. Well, I recognize why he might want one, for the fee… But will this really sell? How many MILF’s actually buy gear?

Think what you want but this thing would sell insanely well. Id argue it would be their top seller.

Trying to figure out how this is any different than say 99 percent of metal bands who use a 5150 and or Dual Rec 😂

I’ve always been very impressed with Mayer’s blues work and his blues tone. To the point where I’d buy this plugin day 1 just for the blues side of it. I know Cory Wong has a heavy name out there but I legit have never heard any of his music (just throwing out an archetype that would be a competitor in this arena). For me, and likely for a shit ton of guitarists out there, a Mayer plugin would be something they’d want to play with at least

I would like to also add that I think my wife is a MILF and she’d probably be cool with me buying a Mayer plugin.
