Roland Cube Street

There’s a great deal on the small Roland Cube Street. It would be a very practical purchase … which of course is why I’m hesitating to pull the trigger. Talk me into buying this thing.

I have acoustic gigs coming up, and I will get use out of the mic input in the more distant future.

And for actual fun I was thinking of putting it on top of my combo amp, and running the effects on my HX Stomp through it to pull off a wet-dry-wet setup.

If you're busking; you should be buying. I'll give it that level of recommendation \m/

And could it be an alternative for vacation travel?

I've been using my Roland Micro Cube but would like something "better". I was thinking about the Yamaha THR 30 II but wondered if, at volume, it would sound small like the Micro Cube and the Roland Cube Street might be better if I wanted to sit in with some local musicians.

When I was in Colombia a couple of years ago some of the guys playing in a couple of the beachclubs wanted me to play with them. One band leader actually showed up at my BnB wanting to jam on the spot. We played for about an hour on its rooftop terrace with the owner and his 8 year old son listening in. For me it was one of the highlights of the trip.

Ideally I want something that will fit in a full sized suitcase, use headphones for silent practice, sound decent when playing in my bedroom, and still be viable onstage if mic'd, direct to FOH, or worse case scenario playing with no sound reinforcement. Having a battery powered option is a major plus.

So Roland Cube Street, Yamaha THR, or something else?

I picked up the Cube Street. I haven’t had a chance to crank it yet, but if you enjoy the tones in the Micro Cube, they are there. I’ll report back later.

I finally had a chance to crank the amp up. I don’t think it could keep up with a drummer without sound reinforcement. You could use it as your own monitor, and it would need to be mic’d since there’s no direct out. I’ve never played the THR30 so I can’t compare. I have played the Cube Street EX which is much louder, but also significantly larger. I jammed with a bassist at home, and it was perfect for that. It’s bigger and louder with an acoustic, but still probably not enough for a drummer.

It’s also been great as a quiet monitor for my HX Stomp. The stereo spread is not great on its own, but putting the Stereo Imager at he end of the Stomps chain really opens it up spatially.

It’s also been great to pair with my Tech 21 Trademark 10 (10w 1x10 combo). As a regular stereo rig it’s definitely loud enough to play with a band and sounds great. I also got a wet-dry-wet thing going, which was fun, but I’ll have to fuss with it a lot more to get something that would hold up with a band.

That may be worth checking out.

Thanks!
