RIP Ozzy :(

I was about 10 or 11 when I started really listening to rock music and Ozzy was one of the first ones I picked up on, along with AC/DC and KISS. I got No More Tears on cassette around then and Ozzmosis shortly thereafter. My uncle took me to see him on the Retirement Sucks tour. Joe Holmes was his touring guitarist then. I didn’t know shit about who played what and when yet as I myself was just starting to play bass but I knew I loved Zakk Wylde’s guitar sound. I started listening to Sabbath too. Started with Master of Reality and that’s still my favorite Sabbath album. I got into the Randy stuff next and was playing guitar then. I got Tribute on CD and that blew my mind even more. Eventually I tracked down most of his solo discography on CD.

I’ve been an Ozzy fan since the day I heard him. I’ve learned more than a few Sabbath tunes and a few of his solo tunes. I love playing the song Diary of a Madman. I still think the No More Tears album has one of the ballsiest rock sounds ever. And while I haven’t always dug his later stuff, props to him for keeping active. And seeing him live was always a treat. I think I saw him solo 3 or 4 times and with Sabbath 3 times. And both Black Sabbath and his solo music influenced so many fucking people and bands. He’s a true legend.
For me, it was KISS (Smashes, Thrashes, and Hits), Yngwie Malmsteen (Trilogy; still a favorite), and Iron Maiden (Piece of Mind; still a favorite). It wasn't until a bit later that I heard Black Sabbath for the first time. I had a VHS cassette of the Road Warriors, as I was a huge wrestling fan as a kid, and it was during their time in the AWA if I'm not mistaken. They used Iron Man at the time.

Sad day. Feels like the end of an era. When I was a kid I had Blizzard of Ozz, No More Tears, and all the Ozzy Sabbath CDs and listened to them nearly every day. Iron Man and Paranoid were the first songs I ever played (terribly) on guitar. I can't think of another musician that had a bigger impact on me.

I was literally just listening to Ozzy two days ago. I don't even know why I decided to put it on.

RIP Prince of Darkness.

For me it was songs like Mr. Crowley, Bark At The Moon and No More Tears that got me hooked on his solo work. You mostly heard Crazy Train and Shot In The Dark on radio here in Finland and those are fine songs and all, but his best are definitely not on the radio. Crazy Train was the first Ozzy song I learned to play nevertheless.

Bark At The Moon is such a fun song to play. I should learn that again.

Andy Wood worked this rendition out during his livestream yesterday-

So jealous of anyone who is on top of their theory game enough to know the relation of all the notes to pull that off. I’d have to sit there and hit a bunch of wrong notes before figuring out the right ones, but there’s no way in hell I can fit any theory into my brain at this point in life.

Satan laughing spreads his wings! RIP Oz.

I took a modern music course in college, great class and even better teacher. He clearly loved music and was a great storyteller. When we hit the course material for rock and roll, his stories got even better because most of them were his own personal first impressions or relating to us things that were happening at the time. It gave new context to stuff I'd heard hundreds of times, really cool.

Anyway, my favorite story was the time he and his brother brought home their first Black Sabbath album. They played both sides of the album, not saying much but exchanging several OMG type glances. He said they pulled it off the turntable, put it back in the album cover, and then put it in a box and under the bed, all by itself. It was the most evil thing they'd ever heard, and they figured they might still escape hell if they vowed to not give it a relisten, lol. He said that album did not return to the record collection until many years later when both were in college.

What a legend for sure. RIP.

Ozzy was my entry point to Sabbath. I never listened to Black Sabbath - thought it just wasn’t for me. But then got hooked on Ozzy. First with Randy. Then later Zakk. Then went backwards to the beginning with Sabbath. Loved it all. Even though I was late to the party.

But something about Ozzy grabbed me and pulled me in. Sure put his stamp on rock and metal and set the bar as a vocalist and frontman as well.
