So this day starts in a terrible way.
Just found out that my old teacher (one of the founding fathers of MI, and scariest Fusion player and teacher) Don Mock passed.
I met Don shortly after I moved from LA to Seattle, must’ve been 94.
He gave a workshop at a store there, was like a group lesson once a week for a while.
A mutual friend helped convincing him to give me private lessons. Which is very much what shaped me more than any of the guys a I learned from.
Later on while I was still living in Seattle we shared a weekly gig in this hip performance space in Georgetown (don’t remember the name) his trio on Tuesdays, my quartet on Thursdays and we’d go and check out each others gig.
Don hated the business and pretended part, but he loved giving advise, hacks, info…he was the music nerd supreme.
He also had a huge impact on guys such as Paul Gilbert and Scott Henderson.
Never got the speed boat thing though
Anyways R.I.P. Don
